US Must Reduce Carbon Emissions by 100% by 2020

The whole world is doomed unless the US reduces carbon emissions to zero within 11 years. :(

I have often made the argument that global warming alarmists are just coffee house Marxists scheming to destroy Western economies so that we can all experience the glorious equality of living in squalid poverty............ but it turns out the situation is so urgent that it will be required for us to actually go back to the stone age if we expect to save ourselves. Apparently squalid poverty will not be green enough.

They say that everyone who finally gets it about climate change has an "Oh, shit" moment--an instant when the full scientific implications become clear and they suddenly realize what a horrifically dangerous situation humanity has created for itself. Listening to the speeches, groundbreaking in their way, that President Obama and Chinese President Hu Jintao delivered September 22 at the UN Summit on Climate Change, I was reminded of my most recent "Oh, shit" moment.

It came in July, courtesy of the chief climate adviser to the German government. Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, chair of an advisory council known by its German acronym, WBGU, is a physicist whose specialty, fittingly, is chaos theory. Speaking to an invitation-only conference at New Mexico's Santa Fe Institute, Schellnhuber divulged the findings of a study so new he had not yet briefed Chancellor Angela Merkel about it. The study has now been published. If its conclusions are correct--and Schellnhuber ranks among the world's half-dozen most eminent climate scientists--it has monumental implications for the pivotal meeting in December in Copenhagen, where world leaders will try to agree on reversing global warming.

Schellnhuber and his WBGU colleagues go a giant step beyond the findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the UN body whose scientific reports are constrained because the world's governments must approve their contents. The IPCC says that rich industrial countries must cut emissions 25 to 40 percent by 2020 (from 1990 levels) if the world is to have a fair chance of avoiding catastrophic climate change. By contrast, the WBGU study says the United States must cut emissions 100 percent by 2020--i.e., quit carbon entirely within ten years. Germany, Italy and other industrial nations must do the same by 2025 to 2030. China only has until 2035, and the world as a whole must be carbon-free by 2050. The study adds that big polluters can delay their day of reckoning by "buying" emissions rights from developing countries, a step the study estimates would extend some countries' deadlines by a decade or so.

Regardless the issues with climate change we should always be striving to reduce emissions. You are being silly saying we are going back to the stone age though. New technologies mean better means of doing what are already doing. Just cleaner.

Barefootsies 10-13-2009 05:05 PM

You mean clean coal is not the answer like the endless commercials keep saying?

:disgust

L-Pink 10-13-2009 05:16 PM

Don't worry, I'm working on the solution.

I don't believe there are any new technologies that will allow us to reduce our carbon emissions to zero by 2020 as is apparently required to avert the catastrophe of global warming. :winkwink:

I must say, I posted this without reading the article. After reading it I'd have to say the guy is an idiot and even if what he says is true there is simply no way to completely stop emissions without ending mankind as well.

TheDoc 10-13-2009 05:33 PM

If Humans never released a single carbon emission into the air, ever in history.. not even a tiny amount.

We would be having the same exact issues today, either way.

stickyfingerz 10-13-2009 05:38 PM

All the tubes fault.. well the tubes and Man bear pig... :1orglaugh

Duh, the entire solar system is going through changes right now... The polar ice caps on Mars already melted recently and most people never even knew that there were ice caps on Mars in the first place lmao...

What is that animated Gif from? It's awesome.

dav3 10-13-2009 06:01 PM

Global warming is a hoax. Millions of vehicles, factories and power plants spitting pollutants into the air 24/7 can go on forever with no adverse effects to the environment!

Bill8 10-13-2009 06:15 PM

What a bunch of whiney ass little bitches.

"boohoohoo we're in the minority now so we're just going to pout a whole lot and make believe we're funny and nobody will notice we're just repeating the same old tired crapola that lost us power before.".

Maybe if you stomp your little feet the rest of the world will take your whining seriously.

Pleasurepays 10-13-2009 06:16 PM

why not 500%?
are we pretending to care enough?

Although it appears you are just a malfunctioning bot or in the wrong thread........ if you had bothered to read the article you would realize it was written by the environment correspondent for The Nation magazine (which is a left wing publication by anyone's standards)....... so I am not sure how quoting The Nation constitutes whining or attempting to be funny.

But perhaps I am reading to much into your post and you are actually just an imbecile who was not even attempting to say anything coherent. :winkwink:

My tin foil hat is Red, White and Blue!!!

But I urge you to read the article and tell me what might be the agenda of someone who proposes cutting carbon emissions in the US to zero within 10 years....... you think it is possible that they don't have our best interests at heart...... just maybe...... you think? :winkwink:

Ah yes, the false "right/left paradigm," the greatest distraction in America. Keep it up guys.

split_joel 10-14-2009 01:26 AM

All are idiots who believe we will destroy our planet if we do not reduce pollution of co2 which is supposed to be the cause of global warming. It is funny that in the years of the dinosaurs there were several, several active volcano's that were going off almost all the time and the amount of co2 was way worse then anything we could produce now. The planet was fine then, just a bit hotter and it will be fine now.

Going GREEN is just another year 2000 ploy to make a shitload of money.

Serge Litehead 10-14-2009 05:14 AM

$$$

although i wish people would clean after themselves and not litter.

Davy 10-14-2009 05:17 AM

Prepare for an increase in the fuel price.

Exactly, that "left/right" BS is the biggest issue in the US.....

The US spends TRILLIONS each year to import Oil from some shithole countries and to keep them quiet with their military forces, would be a good idea to slowly re-invest that money into cleaner forms of energy, my :2 cents:

The problem isn't that it would become warmer, the problem is that it's happening so FAST that it'll cost us a lot of money to adapt, if we're even able to do so.

Evolution will find a way to adapt, but evolutionary processes take millions of years and don#t happen within a few hundred years.

Raf1 10-14-2009 06:01 AM

this is going to be interesting...

Everything humans have done, hasn't made this process any faster. It would have happened, at the exact same pace, either way.

Earth has been almost 20 degrees warmer, than today, with humans around.

The year 2000 issue, wasn't a money ploy, it was a software/code issue found in code throughout the world.

The hype was, bombs going off, planes dropping out of the sky, crap like that, because of the date change bug.

blah blah blah, every scientist has a different theory, only the catastrophic ones get nationwide attention. I for one believe that are climate has been shifting due to the natural order of things, and that the effect we have made is not significant.

However, if you left wing libs keep queefing toxic gayness the Earth might just blow up. :warning
