Wow, tough one. Both performances legendary, but Dustin Hoffman was incredible in his portrayal of autism...

Forest Gump...One very good reason is Forest Gump has no Tom Cruise in it.

They were both great movies because Hanks and Hoffman knew not to go full retard.

Sean Penn was supposed to have done pretty well with his character in I Am Sam. I haven't seen it myself so I can't nominate him for the running.
