Mr Chirac, 76, has been charged with corruption dating to his time as mayor of Paris.
The charges mainly relate to claims that friends and political allies were given big salaries and expenses for 21 ?ghost? jobs in the city. If the case goes to trial, Mr Chirac would be accused of misuse of public funds and breach of trust
Some of the evidence against him comes from beyond the grave after Jean-Claude Méry, a former political fixer and property developer, recorded a damning video before his death in 1999. He claimed that Mr Chirac received at least £500,000 in bribes.
Mr Chirac?s wife, Bernadette, and his daughter, Claude, could also have to give evidence to judges. They are said to have known about ?briefcases full of cash? used to pay for everything from private holidays to official flights.
Mr Chirac has always denied that the money came from bribes, instead claiming that it was from family funds and cash bonuses.
