Did you buy one of those laptops that is loaded with garbage that is set to automatically start on boot? I've got two computers running Windows 7 and they are both great. One machine is about 3 years old with very little ram and it runs fine.

I recently bought an Acer laptop (3GB Ram, AMD 2.8Ghz Dual Core) for a raffle that was preloaded with windows 7 home and yesterday I bought an Asus desktop with windows 7 home. I was also given Windows 7 Ultimate for free by Microsoft.
The Acer laptop ran slow as shit for exactly the reason you outlined above... it was loaded with about 30 different trials, McAfee Security Suite (piece of shit that slows the fuck out of your pc), Google Desktop (piece of shit that slows the fuck out of your pc), some Acer backup program that kept popping up like every 5 minutes to ask me to sign up and ALOT of other shit running in processes. I deleted all of that crap and it runs great now... I didn't want to have to deal with supporting all of that crap because the winner will no doubt call me if they have any problems with it.
The Asus (6GB Ram, 2.6Ghz Intel Dual Core) came with Windows 7 home 64bit preinstalled. It did have a few crappy addons running like their version of an apple dock, McAffee and a ton of other crap... the thing is that this machine has 6GB of ram and it still ran fast with all of that crap installed... but holy crap is Ubuntu fast on that machine.
I have had Windows 7 Ultimate installed on this PC which is a Dell XPS 420 with a Q6600 Quad Core 2.4Ghz and 3GB Ram and it runs better than the Windows Vista Home Premium that is dual booted... but then again... the only issue I ever had with Vista is that occasionally the security descriptors would get corrupted in the boot partition when windows update wanted to reboot the PC and I kept telling it to wait until later... for days.
