Blogging is BIG business -- example: LOLcats

LoLcats = $$$

4. Revenues. Huh has done a great job making money in tough industries. While a lot of blogs are sputtering, his have 30% margins, posting CPMs anywhere between 15 cents and $8. The least profitable is clearly Hawtness, which Huh doesn?t even try to sell ads on, given the dodgy inventory. ?It just hooks in readers,? he says.

Here?s the shocker: The company also makes 30% margins from book publishing deals, and advances and royalties make up nearly a third of the company?s revenues, which are in the ?single digit millions.? More shocking: Huh can?t seem to get a publisher to sign him to a multi-book deal. This despite the fact that the first LOLcats book spent 13 weeks on the New York Times Bestseller List. Really, New York publishing houses?

Huh plans on releasing six books next year and ? SPOILER ALERT- the third LOLCats book will be all about kittens.

If that's the case, the company mentioned in the article should change their name to MEMEPIMPS

All of there big sites are user submitted, viral masterpieces, and they are constantly developing new sites (on free blog platforms at wordpress.com to test the waters).

They actually have a staff of 'post whores' who blast social sites and monitor forums like 4chan to pull ideas and keep an active community base.

There is atleast 1,000 things that we can learn from that business. There is a great wordcamp talk with the one of the main guys, let me find the link.....

LOL Good one :thumbsup

I was also surprised to see they published books... given the source of their content it's pretty ballsy. I guess they can get away with it because the pics are typically user shot as well as user submitted.

As an average joe consumer, I would think it's awesome that they put my contribution in a book. They did all the work, and I have a cool thing to show off forever that cost me nothing.

Great response, bro. There's definitely A LOT webmasters (adult and mainstream alike) can learn from this development. MEMES can lead to money.
