It goes both ways. It's a big risk for him as well since you can't ask a client to waive his potential malpractice claims. Those are void due to public policy/professional responsibility issues.

Could be legit. If you have a little money behind you, it is a great way to prove your worth and get the experience you need to get a better job at a later point.
