When rich people act "cheap". Provide examples you've witnessed.

By "rich" I'm talking about people who likely have a net worth of at least 2 million USD.

My uncle is a rich, cheap POS. Here are some of the cheap things I witnessed from him before I told him to fuck off about 5 years ago.

Keep in mind he is worth 5+ mil.

1. Asking for water cups and filling them up with soda.
2. Tipping $2 to the guy who spent 15 minutes cleaning his H2 at the car wash
3. Giving strippers a $1 bill to rub tits in his face and not tipping on lap dances.
4. Doing fucking algebra to figure out a tip on a bill less than $100.

Lets hear your stories!

$5 submissions 11-09-2009 12:54 PM

I worked for a venture capital firm back in the late 90s and we visited one potential investor who lived in Woodland Hills. Very nice house. Very well-dressed, polished older gentleman. When I went to use the bathroom, no toilet paper and all the soap look like they were old worn down (you know those small worn down thin pieces of soap that are normally thrown away?) stacked together. Pretty funky.

Anyway, we didn't get the deal but he did end up putting $20M in Idealab. Obviously, that was before Idealab's investors sued Bill Gross et al.

xNetworx 11-09-2009 12:58 PM

Oh I almost forgot, he was stealing cable too.

This is the kicker,

There was a deal to get a free car wash with a fillup of at least 15 gallons of gas at a local gas station.

This cheap motherfucker ran out of gas and had to call me or one of his kids to pick him up at least 10 times that I know of because he wanted the fucking free wash so bad. Unreal. Here are some of his cars that ran out of gas so he could get a free wash.

1967 Mustang Fastback
Lexus sc430
Hummer H2
Porsche 911
Pickup Truck

fris 11-09-2009 12:59 PM

the thing is the richest people are always the cheapest.

I used to goto school with a family, and the mother would always goto garage sales and try and lower the price on an item when it was even less than $5.

And her husband runs a big insurance firm, his networth is around 1billion.

goes to show you.

MikesTraffic 11-09-2009 01:01 PM

guess getting the highest return on their dollar is how they ended up rich?

"Getting the highest return on your dollar" and being a cheap fucktard are 2 different things :2 cents:

This is what cheap people say. I bet you are cheap. If you are only going to give the valet $1 to park your $80k car, park in the free lot! Taking care of people when its due is not wasting money.

My wife has no issues haggling at yard sales, even on items that are 10 for a dollar. Hell I saw her leave a deal because the other person would not throw in the some cup that was priced at .15 cents. This was like a 20 buck purchase of like 10 things she spent 30 minutes picking out and then another 10 working on the damn price with the person.

I read an article a while back some old lady died and was found to have like $2mil in the bank, but she lived like she could barely make rent, but left everything she had to her 2 cats, pissing her kids off.

count of monte cristo 11-09-2009 02:30 PM

1. people can pay what they want to pay for service. whether its a car wash or food tip i wont pay more than i think is fair rate. i can blow a ton of money on a car or birthday present for my sister, but for somebody washing my car, when it takes 15 min to do and im already paying $20 for it, i have no prob giving a $2 tip

2. its hard to tell how much people make/spend/have saved. you have people making well over six figures, but after wife/kids/bills/loans, the disposable income that remains can be small, even if they appear to have nice car, house etc. They may have less income left over than a recent graduate with roomates, for instance.

3. in my experience, people that talk about rich people being cheap usually dont have a lot of money or understand how hard it is to make/keep money, they think it comes easy and if you have a lot of it, you should spread the wealth. I have worked my ass off for some of my money and am very careful before i hand it out

Rich people are cheap in everything they do, hence the reason they are cheap. People that act otherwise may have a few bucks for the time being, bit it never lasts. :2 cents:

There is a word for that, and it changes based on where you are from, but where I was raised, it's called "ni**er rich."

The wealthiest people I know are the cheapest.

WeDesignet Lisa 11-09-2009 03:26 PM

rich people can be the most stingy on the planet. Look at Jennifer Lopez and her tipping habits!

lost&found 11-09-2009 03:39 PM

My RICH RICH RICH uncle drives a 1992 cutlass supreme with 400,000 kms because his dream car (jaguar XJS) is too expensive to buy! He has a net of roughly 8 mil USD!

Also he lent me $1000 when we had our first child 5 years ago and is pissed that I paid for university instead of paying him back this oh so large sum... but he gave my other cousin $2k as a b-day gift!

He does not tip, he plays $5 black jack and $0.50 chips on roulette. He stared his business of my aunts first (dead) husbands life insurance and acts like he made it big all by himself....

WHAT A PRICK!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not worth anywhere close to $5M but if I was, I'd still take care of people.

Being a cheap fuck is not the same as being smart with your money.

Plenty of rich people didnt get that way by stepping on the little guy and being stingy. :2 cents:

Ya, kind of like the program owners who bought a program and don't pay their
affiliates.

The money's there, but slow or nonexistent payments. Let's get something good going on and keep the money, when they could just do both! I don't understand it! :helpme

Aside from the thread, I met a guy who owns party pak ice....cool older man who would often say....Who would have thought I could get rich off frozen water..LOL

Vegas might be in the top 5 list of "purchased" bottled water, the water here has a horrible taste, so color me guilty...but not so cheap.

L-Pink 11-09-2009 04:04 PM

I bought some property from a very rich guy. He was leery of anything but a wire transfer. So wire transfer it was. About 3 weeks later when he got his bank statement his bank had charged him a fee of 15 bucks. He invoiced me for receiving his money.

I've spent way too much on it myself. I try to use a brita filter but I like having bottles on hand for working out, guests, etc. I'm addicted for sure.

im not saying I am rich by any means, but I will be "cheap" about some things. one thing I cant stand is when friends or friends of friends think you will cover their bill because they haven't put in the effort in life to make more than $8/hr so they expect hand outs.

i think when you are "cheap" about things it puts it into perspective. tipping 15% instead of 20%, asking for $$ off your food bill because the meal was shitty, etc.

Riffhard 11-09-2009 08:10 PM

I once took a cab in New York and the driver told me that he once had Paul McCartney as a passenger. His cab fare cost $18.50 and he handed the driver a 20. The driver was about to take off when he noticed Paul was anxiously waiting for his $1.50 change.

Why ? then the guy at the valet wouldn't make any money. The valet guy should be happy to get a $1 tip to move a car (normally very nice car) from 1 spot to another + get paid per the hour to do it also.

Also in the annoying list of people that expect tips is bell boys that AFTER you unloaded your luggage runs over "to help" you unload some tips, or the super friendly sleazy waiter that think you are in the restaurant to hear funny stories etc rather than eating.

I know someone with a $7million dollar house who won't buy a $7 collar for his dog because it's too expensive.

My house costs $300,000, and my dog has a collar for every day of the week. I could teach my rich friend a few lessons on how to keep it luxurious.

Uncle XXXX, GFY!

I think the magic word here is "lent." Lent means you were to pay it back. I borrowed $1,000 from a millionaire businessman many years ago when I needed some help. I paid him back as soon as I could, even though things were still a bit tough at that time. If it's loaned to you, you pay it back. It amazes me how many people lose "friends" after loaning them money, that for some reason never seems to get paid back. Beware: Loan money at your own risk. :(

Agreed. When someone owes you money you can't help noticing their spending habits and new purchases they make are like saying fuck you.

frugality has its place when it comes to hard goods but you shouldn't short people for their services especially if its a personal one. if you're going to get a haircut, massage, escort, or any p2p service tailored just for you then you are a cheapass if you do not tip accordingly and you benefitted from their good service its just not cool, there are easier ways to save a penny than shorting your fellow man/woman out of pocket change

Before you think I'm cheap and don't tip, believe me I tip, way more than I should... But anyway... Why do people think they are required to be tipped x amount for their services? If they want more, then they should up the price of the service.. Tip is just that, a tip, something the person paying for the service gives out for exceptional service at their own discretion.
