I just got a repair bill for my car that's higher than the price I paid for it...

well, the car is 24 years old and cost me only $1500 when i bought it - lol

now my mechanic wants about $2200 to fix everything that needs to be fixed :helpme :error :1orglaugh

Twistys Tim 11-12-2009 01:24 PM

What type of car is it? Is it a classic that is worth keeping?

well, it's worth keeping to me - and when everything is in good condition i could sell it for about $4000 (and once it gets 30 years old the price can only go up). it's one out of 50 that are left of them - and as a Quattro it's an excellent winter car :)

so yeah, i am going to pay it

What needs to be fixed on it thats costing 2200 dollars, seems like a waste IMO.

LOL why bother?

you have to see it as a hobby, not a car :winkwink:

If it was a hobby to you then you wouldn't be paying a mechanic to fix it.

Dump the car.

ThumbLord 11-12-2009 01:50 PM

niice car, not many cars left of that type I guess?

JD 11-12-2009 01:54 PM

blow the motor or something? that's a shitload for repairs

shimmy2 11-12-2009 01:58 PM

i collect volkswagens and other VAG audi/porsche hybrids... those old 1st generation mk1 turds are lightweight and fun to drive but only worth anything if they're rust-free. since you drive em in the winter I would have to agree with ditching it, its not like its an audiGT or anything. you can buy 3 or 4 running cars like the one you have on vwvortex.com for the price of your repair bill. strip the lights, interior, and seats for your next project car.... and recycle that POS.

L-Pink 11-12-2009 02:01 PM

I had a 5000 turbo quattro it was an awesome beast of a car in it's time!

my hobby is driving around, it's cheaper to pay someone than fixing it myself. besides that: 60% of the price are the parts. and i am not really a gifted mechanic

PenisFace 11-12-2009 02:02 PM

Don't bother keeping an old car on the road, reguardless of whether you're attached to it or not, unless you do the work on it yourself. You'll NEVER make the money back that you're going to be paying someone else to fix it. If you're a baller, then who cares about some 2,200 for repairs? Keep it. :)

A-n-D-r-E-S 11-12-2009 02:06 PM

That sucks, but if you think it's worth it... Congrats, I hope you can sell it to a higher price! :thumbsup

Driving around isn't a hobby, and it's never cheaper to pay someone then to fix it yourself. Collecting cars is a hobby, but a winter beater isn't exactly a collector car. So burn it to the ground.

femdomdestiny 11-12-2009 02:23 PM

do it

Do it if you like your car, and have money to spend on that, of course. It is better driving something you love instead on generic and modern type of car you can find on streets everywhere.

My mums 1979 audi coupe finally died a few weeks ago, she refused to sell it.
The automatic gearbox went, and it's crazy money for a car worth practically nothing.

My dad got her a Cleo and she's super pissed..hehe.
