Sushi recommendations?
We have a new sushi and wok restaurant nearby.. I tried the nigiri so far but no rolls yet. I know you couldn't really recommend rolls to me, because most places have their own recipes, so it would be hard to recommend a good one without trying them yourself but I am so new to it.. so please help a girl out :)

Rainbow roll is a safe bet, or philidelpia, maybe spider roll.

Catterpillar. Philadelphia is very popular as well.
My favorite is the regular ol' tuna. |
If you are going to a particular sushi resturant it makes suggestions easier.

I only eat cooked sushi so I'd have to go with the spicy shrimp....There's another one I eat but I can't remember it right now.....And you gotta have some seaweed salad as an appetizer.

The first thing to check out is if the restaurant is even Japanese.
There are lots of Korean fake Japanese sushi bars these days. :Oh crap The sushi roll recommendations above are good. I am a simple guy, so I like a good Negihama roll (yellowtail tuna with green onions), but each sushi chef has their own specialty, which they will recommend if you ask them. Itadakimasu... ADG |
My local place is ran by a bunch of Chinese. Every now and then I ask for something special that is not on the menu. That turns into quite the challenge explaining to a Chinese man what Japanese dish I want, who then gets to explain it to a Chinese chef trying to create Japanese.

Philadelphia is awesome.

I am a firm believer that to best just a sushi place even beyond the ethnicity of who owns/runs it is by ordering Tamago. If it is premade, you have been warned. If it sucks, you have been warned. If it tastes fishy you have been warned (not always, see flavored). If it is chewy you have been warned. If it is extra salty you have been warned. If they only have assorted flavors of Tamago and no basic or original type, you have been warned.
If this is good, you are safe with anything else for the most part. Though I myself can not stand Nori much and am trying to develop a taste for it. In the meantime I am stuck with limited choices or tasteless soy wrappers which alter original tastes. I can take small strips, just not large pieces. |

Yummie, it looks tasty!
A good friend of mine suggested these rolls: beef tataki (kind of raw, but seared on the outside with ponsu sauce), spicy tuna roll (tuna with hot sauce and spicy mayo), eel roll (lightly bbq eel with avocado), salmon skin roll, and a volcano roll (scallops, crab, and everything else). I'm into the Philadelphia one too. |

I mean it looks so bleh and well far from sushi - even though sushi does mean the rice. They just seem to want fish. |
Just had dinner at a new local sushi place with my brother here in Holland.

never ever goto a combined japanese/chinese place. Its usually always shit quality unless you don't care.

I judge most Sushi places by their rainbow roll. It's usually the one I start with. If their rainbow is good then I will try some of their more out of the norm stuff. If they fuck up the rainbow then I stick with the basics and/or bail. It also gives you an idea of a few different fish types they have and how fresh each of them are. Then you know what to order or stay clear of.

We were seated next to JFK and Hone Lynn the last time I was there (right before hitting a Gavin Rossdale concert by the pool). Quote:
Another good Asian fusion/sushi place is Blowfish Sushi. They have a few restaurants in the Bay Area, and one that I know of in LA as well. :thumbsup The Polynesian roll is really good! It consists of flash fried salmon, BBQ eel, mango, papaya and avocado... For Rock the Ball in San Francisco last year, I sponsored Nyotaimori (nekkid) sushi at the after-party from Sushi Rock: http://www.asiandivagirls.com/gfy/adg_7915.jpg As I recall, JFK and Hone were there too! Damn those two get around (and they know good sushi)!!! :pimp ADG |
Got a local place here that I love.
We usually get Shrimp Tempura roll - (tempura shrimp, cucumber, avocado) El Diablo roll - (tempura shrimp, cucumber, spicy mayo, lightly battered and deep fried for a sec, with spicy tuna on top) Tiger Eye roll - (smoked salmon, jalapeno, cream cheese, wasabi, mayo, and unagi sauce) Crispy Spicy Tuna roll - (Spicy tuna, cream cheese, asparagus, spicy mayo, unagi sauce). Snowboard roll - (super white tuna, mayo, unagi, and tobiko) |
