Warning to WordPress Users

The new autoupgrade overwrites default theme files, so, if you have modified a default theme (as opposed to putting in a whole new theme), you need to rename it or back it up and reupload it after upgrading or do a manual upgrade.

so if I used a theme that doesnt come with wordpress it still overwrites the theme file or is it with the package themes that come with a out of the box installation?

Just the out of the box themes I think. Like, if you edit an out of the box theme, it will basically revert with the autoupgrade. If you have a totally different theme, named something different from the defaults, it seems to be fine, from what I've seen so far.

brassmonkey 11-17-2009 01:53 PM

i never auto

fris 11-17-2009 01:58 PM

why the hell would you use the default theme folder?

no offense, but that is just stupidity.

Of course it will overwrite it.

Always use a new folder for your theme, I have had clients do this too, such a mistake.

Actually, I think the only other remotely recent iteration of WordPress which overwrote default themes was when widgets were first added.

If you've had clients make this error, I don't think it is stupidity to warn people that this iteration of WordPress will nuke default theme edits.

CPimp 11-17-2009 02:08 PM

LOL Okay at least mine are safe. A lot of newer people like myself dont know these things (aside from myself) so sometimes its not stupidity just because someone's new./

Thanks for the heads up, I don't use defaults but always good to know these things.

sicone 11-17-2009 02:37 PM

Isn't there a warning about this in the upgrade instructions?

I though this is just obvious :2 cents:

Not stupidity to warn people, its stupidity if the person actually does this.

phatbiatch 12-01-2009 12:02 PM

this is why I don't auto update. The wp-content folder and the wp-config.php are supposed to be left untouched. I'm old school like that and as a result never have a problem with things getting overwritten.

Argos88 12-01-2009 01:22 PM

You should use your own themes.

GrouchyAdmin 12-01-2009 01:25 PM

I love TextPattern. I've been rocking the same theme since 2005, and the only shit that ever broked it is when I did it myself.

V_RocKs 12-02-2009 02:50 AM

Use the plugin... and don't use the default folder for security reasons...

John. 12-02-2009 06:28 AM

thanks for the warning

Waddymelon 12-02-2009 06:39 AM
