Look, your thread just went away!

I remember ICMP with a pattern of 2b2b2b to get rid of annoyances, too.

A modem responding to a remote +++ in a binary stream had to be the most stupid idea ever. I remember changing the escape signal to something more obscure to stop deliberate attacks, but there's still a good chance that <arbitrary byte repeated 3 times> could still occur naturally.

I just remember all those stupid connecting noises the modem would make. I thought it was cool back in the day.

You should hear a trailblazer PEP modem connecting... it's half duplex packet based so it went something like:

(other end) dannoodaahh--pff.
(my end) dannoodaaah--pff.
(other end) pfff.
(my end) pfff.
(other end) pffffff.

If you picked up the phone you could actually hear them chirping back and forth to each other. :1orglaugh

They still make those modems http://www.usr.com/products/modem/bu...p?sku=USR3453c

I still remember buying one when they came out with 14.4K, with all the my i had saved...i think i was 16 at that time.

Bought it home and was amazed at the speed of downloading all those porn GIF in 256 colors, stayed up all night.

My first modem was a 300 Baud, but I think the first one I actually used to connect to BBSes was a 2400 bps. Montreal used to have like 300+ BBSes at one point, ah was fun hacking Telegard and Renegade and using them as doorways to IRC and Lynx :winkwink:
