This is just a guess, it probably has something to do with ski's being measured in cm's and the early manufactures wanted to cross market to skiers. Also, Burton set up a European division pretty early during the development of the sport. It wouldn't make sense to start a new sport in Europe and Japan measuring the product in feet and inches.

...... cause the cold weather required for snowboards to be functional makes the inches shrink to cm's... like my example above that have the same principal
