RIP David Aaron Clark - AVN Award Winning Director

I was saving my 22,000th post to make a big announcement about my website, when I learned some very sad news about the passing of a porn legend, and decided to make this announcement instead, since I couldn't find a post on GFY about it.

For those who have not heard, I am truly saddened to pass along the news that AVN Award winning director, and a friend of mine, David Aaron Clark, passed away last Saturday in Los Angeles.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi..._DAC_kimmy.jpg

David was a multi-talented individual, and not just in porn. He graduated with a degree in Journalism from Rutgers, and then wrote for several mainstream publications including the Dow Jones News Service.

He eventually went on to writing gigs at Genesis and Screw magazine. David Aaron Clark (or DAC as he was known to many), was one of the best writers in adult.

He wrote and directed many outstanding adult films, including Asianatrix, the No Man's Land: Asian Edition series, and the Asia Noir series (for which he won an AVN award).

His most recent movie, "Pure", which he wrote and directed for Evil Angel, received multiple AVN nominations, including Best Actor (Keni Styles), Best Actress (Asa Akira), Best Supporting Actor (Jake Malone), Best Couples Sex Scene, Best Music Soundtrack, Best Special Effects, Best Screenplay, and Best Director Feature and Best Video Feature.

David had also previously won an AVN award for Best Screenplay.

David had an edgy style both in his writing and in his video shooting and editing. He was passionate about his work, and it showed. He often focused on the darker side of sexuality - his scenes could be at once beautiful and sensual, and in another moment dark and visceral.

He shared my love of Asian women, and I admired his talent very much - in fact, he is the only adult director whom I have ever asked to get an autograph from. We had just smoked a doobie together, and he thought I was kidding at first. He genuinely seemed moved by my request as he graciously autographed a few of his DVD covers for me.

If you were a friend of his, David was as loyal as any friend can be, and if you got on his bad side...well, David never minced words. To some, he could appear menacing looking with his burly frame, many tattoos, and East Coast accent and sensibility, but he was actually an intelligent and humorous person, with a gentle side and artistic flair once you got to know him.

My sincere and heartfelt condolences to his friends and family.

Rest In Peace David Aaron Clark, a true pioneer and genuine video auteur...you will be greatly missed my friend. :(

Thank you for posting. I wasn't sure if GFYers would know him. I'm still stunned by the very sad news. Here is the obit I wrote for him on Saturday:

RIP David Aaron Clark

David Aaron Clark took me to my first genuine serious BDSM club.

Whether we were checking out a new K-pop singer, attending a medievalist wedding, or standing in line at a book signing, David Aaron Clark was always kind to me. He was not a self-serving fair weather friend or a hater bad weather friend; David Aaron Clark was a real friend to me.

David Aaron Clark is one of the last people still fighting the good fight who really knew me, not my digital persona, not some press, not some rumors, not the guarded self I now present to new people, but the real me. Was one of the last people, not is. Damn it.

David Aaron Clark wrote the first big feature review of Blue Blood magazine in print.

Later, Blue Blood wrote up David Aaron Clark?s first video project which he directed, wrote, acted in, and literally spilled his own blood for.

David Aaron Clark was a brilliant writer. He had a knack for turning even the most mundane video review into something truly entertaining and readable. He was my labelmate at Masquerade/Rhinoceros with his novels The Wet Forever and Sister Radience and the Ritual Sex anthology he and Tristan Taormino co-edited. He and Charles Gatewood collaborated on the blood fetish book True Blood for Last Gasp. DAC was a prolific writer and his talents were seen in many venues from magazines and newspapers to screenplays. A lot of people will probably remember him for his porn video writing and directing, but he created a diverse body of work.

Things were really looking up in 2009 for David Aaron Clark. Evil Angel had actually given him the creative freedom to show some of his true artistry with the Pure movie, produced by Aiden Starr and starring Asa Akira. He used to joke that AVN created a Best Asian Feature category just so they would have an award to give him every year. I think he won for Best Screenplay too and they didn?t invent that award only for him. He was a good person and would really give himself to what he made and I always felt he deserved even more recognition than what he got. David Aaron Clark always deserved an award for his creative work across multiple forms of media because of how much he put in.

David Aaron Clark and I have known each other for approximately sixteen years and ten months. He welcomed me into his home when we lived far apart and I had to travel to see him. We live so close together in Los Angeles, I wish I?d made the time to see him more. Lived so close, not live so close. With the internet, it is so easy to keep up moderate communication and, being an adult, it seems like it just gets harder and harder to make in-person time.

The last thing I said to him was the trivial thought that I wish there was going to be another season of 4400. I wish there was going to be another season of the notorious DAC.

I keep wanting to add details like how he played a non-sex role as a pirate in Joone?s Pirates II: Stagnetti?s Revenge, but I could go on all day listing cool interesting bits and pieces about his life. He lived an adventurous and interesting life, dated wild women, had unusual sex, went cool places, and left behind a significant body of work. That is more and better than a lot of people, and I know this is trite, only I wish he were still here; I feel he got taken way way too soon.

Rest in peace, David Aaron Clark. You are missed.

Here is a link to the trailer from the movie "Pure":

David Aaron Clark's "Pure"

Here is a good review of "Pure", which I think in part answers your question (WARNING: The Following Review Contains Spoilers):

Quote:

Pure (2009)

Hey folks! I received a very nice email from director David Aaron Clark a couple of weeks ago, complimenting my blog (thank you David) and offering me a copy of his new movie, Pure, for me to review. I was planning on buying it anyway, so this was an ideal freebie.

I must admit, I was very concerned that I wouldn't be able to say good things about it - the original movie it's based on, "In the Realm of the Senses" (Dir. Nagisa Oshima, 1976), is one of the greatest (mainstream) sexually explicit films ever made, by many peoples' standards (including my own), and has been studied, written about, and generally considered bad ass ever since it was released.

Clark has a lot to live up to, and I don't like lying, so I was crossing my fingers that this Evil Angel remake would be at least good enough for me to say a couple of neat things about. Well, I'm happy to say that I'm able to do more than that - this film took me by surprise in a lot of different ways. Read on, but be aware that my review contains spoilers, and some imagery may make gentlemen cross their legs.

As a company, Evil Angel has only meant one thing to me: gonzo. Turns out, they have made their fair share of features, many of which are highly regarded, but nevertheless, I was aware that a feature film from EA would probably be pretty high on sexual content.

In many ways, "In the Realm of the Senses" is a perfect source text, seeing as it basically consists of sexual activity as narrative. Both the original film and Pure depict the relationship between Sada and Kichi - in the original film Sada is a concubine to Kichi's married man, and their sexual relationship becomes increasingly intense, violent, and eventually "resolves" itself through Sada strangling Kichi during sex, and then castrating him.

Pure follows this narrative surprisingly faithfully, but set in modern Los Angeles, casting Sada (Asa Akira) as a former prostitute working at a fetish dungeon, while Kichi (Keni Styles) is the dungeon mistress's husband.

My primary concern about Pure was what I believed to be the impossible task of depicting Sada and Kichi's sexual relationship in a modern porn film. The majority of adult film, particularly in the last twenty years or so, relies on what Linda Williams, in her book "Screening Sex", refers to as the "scratch" model - sex with the goal of climax, usually the male's, and is essentially male-centered.

"In the Realm of the Senses", Williams argues, uses an "itch" model, one that is female-centered in its "continuous sexual pleasure," focused less on male climax, and more on the man aspiring to meet "the woman's temporal rhythm of ecstasy". Realm consists of prolonged scenes of sexual activity that are almost feverish in their drawn out pleasures - I didn't believe a modern pornographic remake would take such risks.

In a way, I was right - the opening sex scene appeared to confirm my concerns, and narratively the film takes a while establishing the intensity of the relationship between Sada and Kichi. With that said, though, there are a couple of these more conventional sex scenes that stand out as unconventional by today's standards, most memorably the scene between Akira and Jake Malone.

What I am most impressed by is the way Clark manages to incorporate the "itch" model into "scratch"-type scenes. In other words, a relatively conventional scene can be taking place, such as the one between the lovely Mr. Marcus and a lovely lady, while it is simultaneously being subverted by Sada and Kichi's activities in the background which are lingering and drawn out, at the margins, yet a part of the scene at the same time. The movie still conforms to a "pornographic agenda," yet there is a hint of a subversive sexual dynamic at work at the same time.

It's later in the movie that Clark seems to really get at Sada's increasing fascination with ownership of Kichi's body, and Kichi's submission to Sada's desires. He actually does a good job of developing an intensity to the relationship, with them spending days on end in bed together exploring their bodies and desires, even if these elements are developed a little late in the film for my tastes.

Of course, the finale of the film was something Clark, Styles, Akira, and the make-up team were going to have to pull off (no pun intended) in order to really impress me. Well, let me tell you, I've seen a handful of castration scenes in my time, but the castration in Pure is without a doubt the most convincing. I genuinely don't know how they made it so realistic - but a very effective replica of Styles' penis, as well as some really great fake blood, have to be the key.

I also liked the way the film narrative is framed by police testimonies related to the crime, as well as imagery that foreshadows the film's finale, including a vacant Akira traveling the subway with something in a box...

Needless to say, I recommend this film - Styles and Akira do an outstanding job, and Clark impressed me. Pure certainly won't be to everyone's tastes, and I'm really not sure what audience it will appeal to. But, honestly, that's why I like it.

David's love of Asian women and Asian culture, I think were among the many reasons his work stood far above and apart from most other directors in the Asian niche.

Here is a very nice obituary about David Aaron Clark, penned by one who knew him well, adult industry reporter Gram Ponante:

Quote:

David Aaron Clark, who died this weekend at 49, was a full-time fringe thinker who dabbled in porn directing.

Clark passed away on Saturday afternoon from a pulmonary embolism. He had checked into L.A.’s Good Samaritan Hospital the day before. At his side were two great and longtime friends, Evil Angel general manager Christian Mann and performer Aiden Starr. Starr, like Clark a New Jersey native, was as often Clark’s chauffeur and costume mistress on his movies.

Clark’s bald head, stoutness, preference for black attire, and stentorian delivery were often trumped by his whimsy and glee, which would show up whether he was (brilliantly) pointing out someone else’s foibles on an adult messageboard or giddily anticipating the next Wong Kar Wai film or Sci Fi Channel show.

While he’d directed porn since 1998 (and had won an AVN Best Screenplay award for Wicked’s “Euphoria” and was up for another one for this year’s “Pure”), “DAC” had always been a writer, starting out in his native Bergen County at local papers and then, in their early heyday, at adult publications Genesis and Screw, where he said of publisher Al Goldstein, “He just about made reprehensible charming.”

He also performed live BDSM scenes at clubs like Mother in New York in the mid-1990s, where one of his shows involved getting a pentagram carved on his skin by a dominatrix. He then moved to San Francisco, where he worked for years on that city’s late, lamented Spectator alternative newspaper.

While DAC missed the Golden Age of porn as an active participant in its creation, he was an intellectual force in porn’s Internet dissemination, helping to make porn a nutritious part of a delicious cultural buffet. In this endeavor he was often lonely but never alone, and made friends of kinky thinkers around the world as well as plenty of enemies here at home, with whom he’d often spar online.

He remains one of the few pornographers who were able to make the transition from writing to directing without giving up on either. This might have something to do with his early days in print publications.

Clark had early success with porn screenplays and helped make the Asian niche popular with titles like “Asia Noir,” “Asian Mouth Club,” and “Tales from the Oriental Luv Motel!”. Each was dark and thoughtful and utterly unlike any other Asian porn, often projecting onto the stars Clark’s own philosophies or otherwise introducing scenes with Buddhist quotes. It was very personal pornography and Clark grew a small but loyal fanbase who would follow him from studio to studio.

It is relevant to note that Clark was not rich, well-off, or even comfortable until fairly recently, and it is one of the reasons that his death is so devastating that it seemed like he was finding a groove again. A big man, he had lost weight and was taking better care of his nutrition and diabetes. A bequest from his mother, who died last year, had helped him pay some bills and allowed him to splurge on laser vision correction. He had a stable job authoring DVDs at Evil Angel for the past several months and, as he hadn’t had steady work for years before, it seemed to all his friends that things were looking up.

And then there was “Pure,” which will be Clark’s final film. A porn adaptation of “In the Realm of the Senses,” “Pure” was the quintessence of DAC’s love of all things Asian, combining porn and horror. Rather than chasing directing gigs for months on end, Clark told me earlier this year, he could take the time with “Pure” that he wanted and not have to depend on his director’s fee for his rent. “Pure” recently earned several AVN nominations, including Best Director.

Clark is survived by his stepfather, of whom he was fond, and several close friends in the adult industry as well as followers of his writing from his New York and San Francisco days, not to mention the megabytes of text floating round in the comments sections of other people’s websites, which he left with gusto and no regard for wordcount.

Fans of Clark’s directing would notice many of the same names above and below the line, as DAC enjoyed working with the same crew as much as possible.

Clark was often a guest at my home and a frequent visitor to my office, which is right around the corner from where he used to live. I still have his copy of the “Millennium” box set (tellingly, DAC’s last e-mail to me, sent a few days before he died, were his regrets that he couldn’t come to a party. was the entirety of the subject line).

I don’t like this recent trend of people I admire dying when things seem to be looking up, but I bet DAC would relish the chance to come back as a vengeful Japanese ghost.

There is no word yet from Clark’s inner circle about a memorial service, but DAC gained admirers on both coasts, so stay tuned.

Before David moved out to California some years ago he was around the New York porn scene back in the VHS days like I was. He visited my shoots sometimes in Manhattan, Atlantic City and at a Jersey shore house. David wrote some on-the-set articles for Al Goldstein's Screw newspaper about my early"Strap-On Sally" movies that we shot in or around the NYC Tri-State area. He was a good writer and a talented guy who knew what he liked, Asian women.

AsianDivaGirlsWebDude 12-02-2009 03:13 PM

I was reminiscing with an adult actress whom worked with both David and I, and she directed me to this sample of his writing:

Quote:

The black goblet in the cabinet. When I rinsed it free of sticky champagne residue the day after Christmas, the sleek impenetrability of its design and color started me dreaming.

I imagined using the black glass to trap the issue from your sleek and impenetrable cunt, so I could swallow the intimate product of your forever hidden biomechanics in drunken mockery of my childhood, of every time Christ's blood burned my lips and stained my gullet at Saturday afternoon mass.

There's no god so cruel as desire, and no angel so sullen as obsession. Every Catholic boy wants to be crucified between the twin gallows poles of the madonna and the magdalene. The virgin is boring and the whore is defiled, but if he could only stitch them together with a blunt needle and surgical thread he might create the perfect mate, and they could Elsa Lanchester away into the Transylvanian wood one step ahead of all those angry peasants.

I dream of the car-crash magdalene, the valkyrie of the highways who swallows the crushed souls of drivers like they were transparent alien fish.

I dream of the leather magdalene, who sells me her pain, transsubstantiated into a neutralizing agent for my own guilt.

I dream of the stained glass magdalene, who opens my vein with her colorful jagged edges.

I dream of the switchblade magdalene, who stabs me so deep that all I feel is the implacabilty of erotic allegiance.

Imagine how startled I was when after casually dominating me one evening, toying with me in an unusually sadistic, chilly way, you smiled and stalked off to the kitchen. I heard the cabinet door open, and I saw your back as you walked into the bathroom and closed the door. I heard the uneven spatter as you pissed into something other than the toilet bowl.

When you came out with the black goblet in your hand, held forth for me to take, I thought you must be a demon. I knelt before you, staring up into your eyes, the heat of your body temperature warming the glass in my fingers. Before I could decide to hesitate, or to sip, I tossed my head back and swallowed the salty, bitter sacrament in one gulp. And decided to love, fear and hate you forever.

You grabbed my chin and spit in my mouth for the chaser, and from there its all a midnight movie feature seen through a smudged, druggy haze:

Was that me who made that sound?

Was that you who loomed above me so terrible and majestic, your arms taut and white and your features drawn feral as you raised the whip over your head for yet another blow?

Was that you who rubbed your thighs against mine as you assaulted me from behind, driving a toy cock that at least to me might as well have been your own back and forth in the sort of a fuck that makes a person just shut their eyes and watch the double helix spin like firefly embers whipped about in the hollow wind of a dying universe?

Was that me who cried for you to draw his own belt tighter around his neck, as your black hair fell across eyes glowing with savage arousal and you yanked yanked yanked until I came for just short of eternity and you smiled in cruel, smug triumph to see the glaze of hopelessly intractable gratefulness and allegiance that clouded my eyes?

Was that you that shook beneath me as I felt the walls of your vagina contract around my hand as I traced serpent's tails around the soft, clear-tasting ring of your anus? Was that you whose soft breasts rolled so gently under my touch, as warm and fleeting as a kitten's kiss?

Was that us who turned emptiness into light, and then extinguished the candle by pressing it too quickly against our souls, leaving only black smears?
