TGPX vs. Smart Thumbs?
We're looking at adding a TGP site to our business and it appears that TGPX and Smart Thumbs are the current leaders for scripts. Is there any major benefit/negative to either to differentiate them? Or is it a case that you can't go wrong with either?
Also, wouldn't mind a little feedback on the TGP biz... we've been building and managing paysites and an affiliate program of our own and are thinking this could be a good way to help promote our content as well as provide a mechanism for trade, etc. Is that a good strategy or are we setting ourselves up for unlimited pain and suffering? Thanks for any help you have time to provide.... Korak |
It depends on yourself really.
There is nothing that Smart Thumbs can do, that TGPX can't do. Sadly, it isn't the other way around. With Smart Thumbs you're limited in what you can and can't do. So to make it really simple: TGPX: You are the boss. Everything imaginable is possible. Requires more coding than ST. Smart Thumbs: The script is your boss, you control the script within it's limits. I don't want to "bad talk" ST, I have tried both script and this is my very own opinion. Compared to ST, TGPX wins in every single way. ST is more "user friendly" while TGPX gives you plain white pages and template variables and options. If you want a very easy and user friendly script that requires a little understanding, then go for ST. If you are willing to take things a bit more complicated, then go for TGPX. TGPX will take some time to get away with. But once you're familiar with it, it's just as easy as ST is. I pulled out my hair when i first installed TGPX. Now however, I would NEVER consider any other script anymore. Besides, JMB Soft is very well known for their outstanding costumer support. If you decide to go for TGPX, feel free to hit me up and I'll help you out with anything you need :) 565-013-936 |
If you really have no experience with TGPX, and don't want to go through the trouble to learn to work with it, then I guess I could set up your whole TGP with TGPX for a small fee. That's assuming you have your own design ofc :p

Did you see much value in the database of content that Smart Thumbs is maintaining? I didn't see a similar plug on TGPX's site... the description by ST sounds good... automatically have tons of content updating all the time... just not sure how helpful or realistic that ends up being...
Thanks for responding by the way! Any thoughts on how much a "small fee" would be for set-up assistance? |
There is really nothing that ST can do and TGPX not. Look at my other TGPX related thread about seo-friendly descriptions / urls.
The plugin is not only available for ST. http://www.smart-scripts.com/?action...dp6170144 7r0 Here you go. Works with TGPX too. Install it, and done. (It's free) As for the fee, it depends on how much work there is to do. If your TGP contains 1 category, and the layout is the same for every page, then it will be quite cheap. However, if you plan to start a multi-niche with let's say 60 categories, and want each template to be setup diffrently, then well it's common sense it requires alot more work and time. TGPX seo-friendly urls: http://www.gfy.com/webmaster-q-and-fuckin-a/940677-tgpx-users-seo-friendly-gallery-urls-smart-thumbs-look.html ICQ: 565-013-936. Talks easier than a forum :) |
oh just quickly adding that "automaticly updating" is possible with TGPX too. Both scripts use "Cron Jobs" to update. Infact, it is possible for every website to automaticly update using cron, it's not limited to any script.
The only requirement for "automatic updates" is that your host must allow cron jobs. But if any host or server is missing that nowadays, then I wouldn't even pay :1orglaugh |
Thanks Tamashi, we've got a dedicated server so we're good with cron... really appreciate your help and insight. I think we're going to push forward with the project and am leaning toward your recommendation for TGPX. If you've got an affiliate link for them post it and I'll make sure I click through if we order it...

Btw, don't take it like TGPX is only for coding experts. They do provide you with a template builder for galleries. Just fill in the form, and the script will generate your code. For the rest, TGPX got a very, very, very detailled user manual (unlike ST). Everything TGPX is capable of doing is written down there. The manual is very structured so you can just select what you're looking after, and just right to the page you need. The TGPX installation also comes with an "example" map, filled with quite some text files showing how things are done.
Everyone can easily learn to work with it, just compared to ST you have to do a bit more reading and templating. But if you want to learn, you'll learn fast :) If you require additional installation help (installing the script on your servers and configuring the general settings) then I'm willing to do this for free if you signed up under my referral link. Please note that this does not include setting up your final and public tgp templates. But even if you require help with that, I can help you out for a very small fee. |

Do not wait; the time will never be "just right." Start where you stand, and work with whatever tools you may have at your command, and better tools will be found as you go along.

I agree ! TGPX rocks ! but how do you set the skim on tgpx ? anyway how do you setup the skim in general ? I have designed my tgp quickly and shitty (boobseye / com) added the toplist, (haven't exchanged trades yet) added the galleries, but what next ? how do I set the skim with TGPX ? or do I need a separate script fro that ? |

The script runs on auto-pilot, so no databases needed. |
