Federal Salaries ... WTF? I had no idea .......

I had no idea our civil servants were making this kind of cash! ....

"When the recession started, the Transportation Department had only one person earning a salary of $170,000 or more. Eighteen months later, 1,690 employees had salaries above $170,000"

"The growth in six-figure salaries has pushed the average federal worker's pay to $71,206, compared with $40,331 in the private sector"

"There's no way to justify this to the American people. It's ridiculous," says Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, a first-term lawmaker who is on the House's federal workforce subcommittee"

I have a family member that is basically a secretary for one of the local county offices... she makes $50k a year.

There are jobs that the public sector should definitely be competing with the private sector, in terms of salary for a qualified people. But the pay on some jobs is just silly.

Sly 12-11-2009 10:14 PM

If you guys have heard about the Baucus hoo-ra lately... several of his staffers received $14,000 raises in 2008.

Sly 12-11-2009 10:15 PM

Don't forget the 14 paid Federal holidays.

In the past their lower salaries were offset by benefits and guaranteed retirement pay. Now the retirement checks will be huge!

In the private sector, you will often see low-paying jobs with better benefits. That's the trade-off.

With some of these public sector jobs, you are seeing the better benefits and the better paying jobs. It's just silly. And doing this all during a recession just makes it that much worse...

Yeah there should be a list of bs govt positions that bring in 6 figures. There are a lot of them at the state and federal level.

fatfoo 12-12-2009 02:35 AM

Not only that - the salary of President of United States is like $400,000.

Says the man who makes $169,300 a year for a part time gig.

kane 12-12-2009 02:54 AM

A friend of mine is a cop in a small town. They have a guy that works for the city as the "city planner". His job is to issue building permits, if there is digging to be done he has to go out and mark the ground where the underground lines are so they can dig around them and then he also has to look into any code enforcement complaints (like if you call to complain that your neighbor's yard looks like shit).

He has a full time secretary and makes around 75K a year and brags that he maybe works 20 hours a week. He takes 2 hours lunches, surfs the internet, goes and talks to other city workers and generally fucks off. His secretary does all the filing work for any permits, he just approves them and she actually makes and returns most of the calls. Her job is completely unnecessary and his should be a part time gig or much lower paying, but the city forks over about 150K a year for his department.

Last year when he had money left at the end of the year for a budget he bought five new computers. New desktops and laptops for he and the secretary and another desktop that he only uses to run the office fantasy sports and social calender on. Just a total waste of money.

In his defense it actually is a full time job. He in Washington DC part time then back home part time. This guy is part of a show they have on cnn.com where they follow two freshman representatives. This guy works around the clock when he is in DC (he doesn't even rent an apartment like most do, he has a cot in his office that he sleeps on). Then when he is home he has non stop meetings with different groups as well as a ton of town hall meetings so he can keep in touch with the people of his district.

The big waste is that he has two different full staffs. He has one in DC and one in his home state and gets an annual budget of 3million to run his office.

its easy to waste that kind of money on salaries when you didn't have to earn it to begin with and the success of your operation doesn't depend on profit/loss. these fucking idiots take money out of everyones pockets everytime they need it and few care... or are even paying attention

The Judge 12-12-2009 12:59 PM

That's just the tip of the iceberg, they get 75% of their last salary as pension for life when they retie, that's worth like 75% X 70,000 x 30 = a whopping 1.6 Million each. What will you get when YOU retire? :1orglaugh

Go Big Government! I LOVE being an economic slave don't you? Let's give them control of our health care! Let's create a whole new World Government so we can pay more people more than we make to sit around and dictate our lives. Hell Yeah!

Darkland 12-12-2009 01:35 PM

I wish I could find the link again and maybe someone here has it, but I remember seeing a calendar showing how little a congressman or state representative works in a week. It was like a day or 2 a week and they get paid all that money.

I'm the first one to knock politicians, but that isn't really true. They may only be in their Capitol Hill office for a day or two a week... but they also need to work at home nonstop (particularly during election cycles LOL), plus they typically have multiple home-state offices.

Cost of Aghanistan surge :
Quote:

First, $30 billion is the "figure du jour," but it is not likely to be the right number. CRS estimates would lead to the conclusion that about $1 billion per thousand troops is a good ballpark if you are using your own personal envelope. However, two other elements are likely to enter in: accelerated deployment, and non-military costs

Amazing how the cost was not debated like the health care cost .....
