The new iMac core i7 is just sick

This has to be one the best blessings in disguise....

I was forced to switch my work from my MBP+Cinema display to a desktop-based setup, so I decided to order the new core i7 as it seemed pretty decent.

Now I've never been an iMac person, always preferring a tower/monitor setup, if it isn't a laptop, but when I got this thing setup, it is the dogs bollocks. I've never been one neither for glossy screens, but somehow it's just meant to be on this gentle giant - rich and colourful where everything pops.

At first, I was "jesus, this thing is frikken huge", but after a 2 days playing and installing and getting friendly with it, it has very very quickly become "normal". Oh, my poor MBP, it's going to be be painful working on it at any point again!

I just ran 50 RAW NEF images through DxO and it was like it was pissing low quality JPEGS :1orglaugh I can get used to this!!

Does Final Cut Studio 3 work on it though?

Thurbs 12-19-2009 09:16 AM

agreed.

new i7 imac at the house.

now the MBP is just for the bed / travel. also have all 3 desktops in sync with dropbox trickery :)

Well, a desktop and laptop will do me fine... in fact it was my "4000th GFY post" present to myself. So to be a better multitasker, I'll have to wait till 10k posts when I will treat myself to something else :thumbsup

What's really weird though is I can't get used to this keyboard - when I'm working on the MBP alone or using the old style bluetooth extended keyboard, I can rattle off text no problem, but with this one, I just keep hitting the wrong key, which is really strange cos it seems exactly the same size as the MBP keyboard...

weird, but will get used to it after a bit...

candyflip 12-19-2009 09:26 AM

I'm ordering mine after the new year. Gonna replace my little 24'' with the 27''.

Horny Joe 12-19-2009 09:36 AM

Looking great!

Getting me one of those as well, sometime over new year...! I have the tower in the livingroom now with cables all over... And the CPU cooler sometimes sounds like a jet... The wife hates it.... But - I will still keep the old one... use it as multimedia server, or something.....

How are you doing your sync part? also is it in 3 different locations or all on the same network?

I've got a 17" MBP (new version) with 24" LED display, Mac Pro (dual quad core) - dual 30" displays, and a i7 iMac.. would love to keep them all in sync better - no matter where I am :)

Not sure they can push two 30s. I know the MBP my girl has won't work with two monitors that size.

Manowar 12-19-2009 02:25 PM

that thing looks beautiful

fatfoo 12-19-2009 04:06 PM

iMac core i7 looks good in your photo, borked.

zabijaq 12-19-2009 04:30 PM

That's keyboard? Looks more like white ZX Spectrum.

Borked, can't you get more practical keyboard and mouse that doesn't have shape of a brick? :) these days?

Sosa 12-19-2009 04:33 PM

Nice to see you using Dropbox. One of my good childhood friends is one of their programmers

what's the price tag on one? thinking about getting a desktop

Jay-Rock 12-19-2009 06:03 PM

LOL I7 processor ... so its a PC with MAC OS on it. nice man I built both of my PCS with I7 processors and they smoke anything I have ever worked on. I can't crash my PC if I try and I can render content while editing in Premiere at the same time. I couldnt even open the rendering while editing when I had the old dual core machine LOL

digifan 12-19-2009 06:07 PM

That's one badass monster, congrats!

bronco67 12-19-2009 06:15 PM

I have 4 i7 PC's that'll eat that for breakfast.

Nice... you have the same small bluetooth keyboard and magic mouse that I have on my new Mac Mini.

Whats up with that mousepad you are using?

I love my G5, but it's got a dozen fans (and water cooling!) and it is fricken LOUD. That new i7 looks beautiful.

NetHorse 12-19-2009 07:24 PM

Congrats on spending a ton of money. :thumbsup

Shoplifter 12-19-2009 07:27 PM

The displays in the new 27" IMacs are the best panel displays I have ever seen.

As soon as LG releases them as a standalone monitor I'm grabbing one.

Intel was a PC based company and MAC adapted their motherboards and processors. Build your own mac or you dont get it.

That's the system i'm looking to get into next. Been waiting on the 2010 mac pros. Any chance of a pic with the dual 30 inch'ers? :)

On top of that, how do you like the setup? I've read so many opinions on the dual 30 inch setup. Any comments or thoughts/advice to add?

will take pic tomorrow. it's sick. sometimes i still might get focused on one.

great for big spread sheets and comparison stuff. keep mail + contact lists in one. too bad spaces is not monitor dependant. basically you have 2 monitors for one space , oh well, can dream.

Great for guys that do Pro Audio! How does pro tools run on the new OS? Anyone doing pro audio multitrack recording/mixing/mastering with pro tools? I just got an email that windows 7 works seamlessly from the manufacturer. Im curious to know if the new Pro Tools is supported for all the pro audio guys out there by the new MAC. Im just curious I would never buy one LOL

Sorry, but Mac's will always be more superior to PC's and you PC fanboys will just never understand it because you think you can buy the hardware and build a PC that is equal to the specs of a Mac for half the price, yet don't realize the hardware and SOFTWARE of Mac's just go well together, that's why they are better, and Windows always has to try to support many different hardware, that's why it's crap.

P.S. I'm a PC user who has a cheap iBook that doesn't even have enough power to run FF let alone any of the programs I use to work, but I love it so much, next year I'm upgrading my whole setup to iMacs and MBP's.

I have 2 30s, but working with them both hooked to the same PC was way too much.

Now they sit on my desk each connected to it's own box. I work much better like this.
