What kind of visa rules are there for long term stay? I heard you can just get a tourist visa and stay there for years, is that true?
What city is the best to stay in, Medellin?

Is it true that you can get coke for $5 per gram there? :1orglaugh:helpme

k0nr4d 12-22-2009 10:43 AM

I woudl imagine the coke costs much less then that.

:2 cents:, especially in Medellin.

More English is spoken in Bogota.

People in Medellin are VERY weary of foreigners, given their past, so it's hard to make friends / get involved. However, if you like cultural crap, it's a great city :thumbsup

If you actually moved there, the visa situation would be one of your lesser worries.

Raf1 12-22-2009 11:03 AM

how safe is it there at the moment?

It's just as safe as NYC, and even safer if you're a man and don't look like a total idiot gringo.

Just don't act like a jack ass and you'll be fine :thumbsup

I mean, if you go trudging around the jungle, then you may be kidnapped by the FARC, so don't do that.

Just use common sense and stay alert. However, it is safer than it was, i.e. less random bombings of buses, etc.

Agent 488 12-22-2009 11:35 AM

pornguy 12-22-2009 11:51 AM

Not a place I would go if you are a gringo.

Ive been to medellin, the women are hot. The city is polluted. you can smell the polution. I would try some of the other citys located not far from the ocean. You need to speak spanish there. 95% dont speak english.

The women are CRAZY gorgeous (if you have the "if you can feel it, it's real attitude") and cater to their men (which is something that gringas aren't always praised for :Oh crap).

So, if you like hot women that enjoy "taking care of their man," then it's pretty good.

Also, a lot of girls look to marry a gringo to "move on up," get out of the country, etc. So, they're also kinda using you at the same time, but isn't that every fucking relationship in some way, shape or form?

Also, a lot of my guys friends would complain because their conversations consisted of, "Look it's a fork, tenedor, ha ha ha, let's make fucky fuck." Basically, don't expect to talk about politics or health care reform, but that's mostly the language barrier as well...

ˇViva Colombia! :thumbsup

I feel ya! I've seen a lot of people come and go and I think Spanish has a lot to do with it.

It's all about effort...Sadly, languages aren't learned by osmosis. :disgust

I suggest you use Pimselur (in my opinion, one of the BEST for learning to SPEAK...I got "okay" at Russian with it) -- I have it, so I can send it to you, but it's enormous. Google it...He has a whole method about the most used words, etc.

Also, check out www.livemocha.com -- It's a social networking style site to learn languages. They have Rosetta Stone style courses and you can chat with people (if you so desire).

Try to read the Prensa, watch TV in Spanish, etc. You'll eventually get over the hump and it'll all be downhill from there! :thumbsup:thumbsup:thumbsup

Yeah, I love living here and don't have plans to move anywhere else anytime soon (though if I did it would probably be Colombia, funny enough, or Buenos Aires).

I love the wackiness, ridiculousness, and the relatively laid back attitude. However, the very things I love are what drive me f'in nuts at the same time. :upsidedow

For example, I think it's hilarious that there are fireworks every god damn day, the taxis are pretty funny (not to mention the convos I have with the drivers), it's awesome being able to buy a relatively nice bottle of wine for $5, etc.

I also like that there are tons of different places so close - like Casco, El Valle, the Causeway, Cerro Azul, Bocas, the Caribbean, etc.

Don't get me wrong, I've been about to board a plane at Tocumen many a time, but at the end of the day I'm happy here. :winkwink:

CaptainHowdy 12-22-2009 05:32 PM

I can give you spanish lessons, Farang... I accept thai currency (tranny).

I live in rio and I fall into this trap sometimes. You miss just being fluent. Get a teacher. one on one for a month will solve a lot of issues. it helped me tons. If you have a local for a girlfriend, only talk Spanish with her. The first big blowout will improve your skills in about 30 seconds. :winkwink:

yeah but my problem is understanding basic spanish, AND understanding 1000 words per minute spanish when panamanians are talking in a group is something else..

some of the americans i know here have been learning spanish for 3-4yrs and they still dont wanna hang out in a group of latinos cuz they feel lost...

personally for me thats not life... understanding how to use me gusta is completely different from using humor, sarcasm, etc in a different language.. itll take me years to get there.. not willing to lose those many years at this point...

Medellin has the hottest girls, has a lot of expats too. It's mountainous, the smog gets trapped in the mountains, and there are areas there you DON'T want to go. My friend got killed there a few years ago. Robbed in an industrial area (was looking to buy a warehouse) by a guy on a motorbike, shot in the head. Or so goes the report.

Several GFY guys live there. Production goes on there too. You need to speak Spanish.

If you're going to do blow, get it from the source. Colombia has THE BEST blow on earth. Hands down. And it's cheap.

I can say in all honestly, you have not done coke unless you've done it in Colombia. You won't put other shit in your nose ever again, because you will realize what shit it is.

Gotcha, I have been in rio for 3 years and I can get lost with a big group of Brazilians. My language just now is hitting its stride. I still suck if I have to tell a long story. A long funny story? forget about it.

I also have learned to like the added difficulty. It used to be hard to buy lunch. Now I am finding it challenging to make some real estate investments. Adds the zest. Not sure how Panama is but brazil is so amazing that I will never leave.
