upgrading my host

I am upgrading my host after years of the same account. It has been forever since I did any research so I just figured I'd get some opinions on here on if this is a good deal.

Intel C2D E5200 Dual Core - 2.5Ghz, 2MB Cache, 800FSB
2GB DDR2-800 RAM
500GB SATA2 3.0Gb/s Enterprise Edition HDD
Dual Gigabit NICs
1U Supermicro Server - 2 HDD Bays

2000GB Monthly Public Transfer
Unlimited Monthly Private Transfer
10Mbps Public Network Bandwidth
10Mbps Private Network Bandwidth
/29 IP Allocation - 5 Usable IPs
Private VLAN
Remote Reboot
Server Monitoring - PING Response
Real-Time Bandwidth Monitoring
$179/month

That is not a bad deal if the host is a decent host with good support. You could get a better deal at a great host if you talk to the people at www.techiemedia.com :2 cents::thumbsup

Vendzilla 12-28-2009 05:32 PM

ALways talk to the guys at webair, you never know what they will say

The Duck 12-28-2009 05:33 PM

I would contact Webair Gerard and see what he can do for you.

That's expensive for less than 10 Mbit, that's generally what I see 35 or 30 unmetered Mbit packages going for these days. I think you can you much better.

There must be some mistake with that quote (or a value added service not listed), because their website has the same spec server listed for $99/mo.

Who has it for $99?

rowan 12-28-2009 11:10 PM

Hmmm, the co I'm thinking of has multiple front ends (but presumably the same sales staff) so perhaps we're not talking about the same one... the website I found the $99/mo server on starts with P.

Not who I have been using. But I guess I should start doing some research again. I would think prices have come down alot since I started using them.

Ok, I'll be a bit less coy...

I recognise the format of that quote so I'm pretty sure I know who it came from. Here's two of the frontend companies with the same spec server, it's highly likely that the support and network are also identical...

pacificrack - http://www.pacificrack.com/dedicated.html , $99/mo plus a free upgrade to 4GB RAM (see the promo info near the top of the page)

oc3networks - http://www.oc3networks.com/managed , $149/mo

So where did your $179/mo server come from?...

I'll leave it up to you to figure out what (if any) differences there are besides the price. :thumbsup

sandman! 12-28-2009 11:23 PM

if you think 2000 gigs is less then 10 mbit you need to work on your math a little.

sandman! 12-28-2009 11:24 PM

i would guess one is a fully managed server and one is not.

Well actually I am using OC3 and I was paying the $149 for
P4 2.6GHz
512MB DDR RAM
80GB PATA HDD

I asked about upgrading and that was the info they sent me. I figured they have been upgrading their system and I was probably stuck on some old network that was just not up to par with what they typically sell now. They want me to upgrade to the $179 account because they said I am to low on memory and it crashes my server. I honestly barely know shit about this stuff since I just mainly focus on building sites and doing photography. I don't build computers let alone servers so most of the info just kinda confuses me a bit.

rowan 12-28-2009 11:59 PM

So why are they quoting you $30 a month more than their site?

paytonrain 12-29-2009 12:06 AM

Not sure I think they just upgraded what they offer and left me on the shitty server I started on years ago. I emailed them to ask the same question today but they never got back to me. I was looking on their site today and didn't see what I have on their anywhere so I think they don't offer that anymore they just leave idiots like me with it since I never really check up on my server stuff.

Until now that it is crashing every week or so.

rowan 12-29-2009 12:09 AM

Yes, a 2.x P4/0.5GB RAM/80GB HD is effectively obsolete, or very low end if you were able to order one today.

If it's only lack of RAM that is the issue then it may just be worth adding in more RAM... 30 mins of downtime to fit a couple more sticks versus transferring everything to a new server and ironing out the quirks, ...

If I were you I'd ask for a discount on your existing server (since the h/w is obsolete) and perhaps ask them nicely if they can throw some more RAM into it. They've already written off the hardware so they're not losing any money... $149/mo for that spec is almost pure gravy.

TidalWave 12-29-2009 12:35 AM

I'm pretty sure George was including the price of cPanel or Plesk license in that quote he sent you to get you moved off the really outdated control panel in use on your current machine as it won't be transferable onto a new machine.

While I would certainly like the opportunity to earn your hosting for Caro.Net I have to agree with Rowan's wisdom and insight.

Beyond the RAM upgrade you might investigate your network connections a little bit. While 2000 GB of transfer and 10 Mbps Private LAN connections may be plenty for you, look to take advantage of your 1 Gbps NIC's with a minimum connection to your supporting network of at least 100Mbps.

Good luck with your upgrades and if you do search further please keep me in mind, Caro.Net is the network home to AEBN and I would certainly do my best to earn your business.

Best of prosperity in the New Year!

Thank you. I really have always had the best of luck with them so far and honestly the support there is great which is a HUGE thing for me cause I get lost alot trying new programs and different kind of sites and they walk me through everything very well. I just don't have alot of traffic and hate to have to worry about things crashing when I start having alot of members on the site. I just need to listen to you guys and check my options and make sure I am getting a good deal.

I do hate the idea of moving all my sites somewhere new. Hell I could really screw that up...haha

paytonrain 12-29-2009 01:23 AM

OK once again the guys at OC3 hooked me up and are taking care of me. What a relief I don't have to move all my sites somewhere new. They really stepped up on this one since I was on such a old server they are fixing me up.

I just wanted to thank everyone for posting and thank OC3 for pulling through and making sure my sites don't crash and burn.
