Why would you call Patrick Stewart gay? He was married for many years, has grown children and has since been married again and more recently dated other, much younger women. That's the life story of a straight guy.

Generally just the title these days I believe. Given as part of the Honour system to recognise some kind of achievement or service etc.

He is getting Knighted more for his stage work - which is rather extensive over here - than for anything Trek related.

You do not need to be english to be nighted.

Aren't non-British people just given honorary knighthoods? Spielberg got one a few years back but it isn't the same as the 'full' one apparently. Not that I know what being one actually gets you other than the title. I know some other commonwealth countries give their own. New Zealand gave one to Peter Jackson this year, for example.
