Jay Leno = CANCELLED

Great news, for fans of funny.

Waddymelon 01-10-2010 05:30 PM

He's just being reshuffled back to late night, NBC isnt letting him go.

EscortBiz 01-10-2010 05:33 PM

they finally figured out that connan = good for kids who like to see puppet shows, he is the master of taking a good joke and really presenting it childish

Iron Fist 01-10-2010 05:33 PM

I think Conan o'Brien is going to get the shaft from this move... NBC fuckers.

Mr. E 01-10-2010 05:38 PM

Most people figured Conan wouldnt work at 11:30pm and they were right. What made his show funny were the bits, not the monologue or even interviews. But you cant put masturbating bears, Triumph uncensored and all the other classic shit on the tonight show, doesnt work. Plus, Leno has a broader audience, older people know him and like him too.

Personally I agree. I've tried and tried and tried to like him, I just can't. To me, he takes a bit of news and gives it the same exact slant and joke on every episode. I like Leno, a lot of people think he is too mild or boring.

So what exactly are they doing? What is the switch?

They should have kept Southland!

I don't think Conan is the problem, (although his ratings were down.)

It's the fact that Leno was sucking in his new time slot and the affiliate stations were complaining about losing around 30% of their viewership as a lead-in to their nightly local news broadcasts.

While Leno was cheaper for them to produce than dramas, he apparently can't bring in enough viewers as compared to the more expensive dramas they used to play in that time slot.

Thing about those dramas is they bring you back every week to watch what happens next. If you miss a night of Leno, no big deal.

Plus, 10 o'clock is a prime time spot. You can find decent things to watch on each of the network channels and also many of the cable channels. TNT, TBS, FX... they all carry their own shows now.

They are thinking of putting Leno on at 11.30 with a 30 min show ..then Conan on at 12 and drama back at the ususal time....guess that should make both of them reasonably happy.

Thats kind of how I feel about Letterman, he isnt funny at all to me. I like Leno and Conan. And that Scottish guy whatever his name is, he is a little funny but I cant watch his entire show without flipping the channel.

Axeman 01-10-2010 06:30 PM

Conan is kinda in a bad position right now as NBC really wants to push him back to 12:35 but due to his contract may be only able to do it to 12:05. And even that is rumored to be breach of his contract.

Fox has said they may be interested in bringing him over and they can offer him the 11pm timeslot. Could be an interesting vehicle for him to build up his own base and push the edge at an earlier hour.

And since NBC was in breach of contract, Fox could offer him $2 million a year and NBC would have to make up the difference to his $20 million deal. Great way to stick it right back in NBC's ass. Make them fund another networks program.

I find Craig Ferguson to be the funniest of the talk show guys with Conan 2nd and Letterman 3rd. Leno is by far the worst. I do watch some of Kimmel sometimes as I like the bits he does, and he gets good music.

Spunky 01-10-2010 06:35 PM

It wasn't the same.Lenos ratings tanked and sponsors were talking about pulling out

TisMe 01-10-2010 07:18 PM

Conan can sign with Fox for a dollar but going to work for another network would be a breach of his contract by him.

So he can sit home and collect paychecks if NBC breaches his contract, go along with their plan and move back 30 minutes or walk and negotiate a settlement and then go to work elsewhere.

This is all actually Conan's fault to begin with. Not sure how many people know what went down but it was like this. 6 years ago when Conan's contract with NBC was up, ABC was going to throw a bunch of money at him to take over for Jimmy Kimmel who's ratings were crap after his first 6 months. Conan told NBC if he stayed, he wanted to take over as host of the Tonight Show. NBC said he could take over in 2009, probably figuring Leno would be ready to retire by then anyways, so Conan stayed.

When 2009 was coming up, Leno become pretty hostile towards NBC. Even blasting them in his monologue almost nightly, pissed that he was being pushed out of his job. Fearing Leno might jump ship to Fox, NBC sold him on the idea of his own show at 10pm (and who knows what else) and he took it. So basically it was Conan's doing. NBC's ratings for Leno on the Tonight Show were great and he had been number 1 in his time slot for years. You dont just toss that aside for a new guy, but they did to keep Conan on NBC.

fatfoo 01-10-2010 08:24 PM

I don't watch it much. I've seen a few episodes.

Mr. E 01-10-2010 08:37 PM

Forgot to mention this in my last post. Another thing that isnt helping Conan in the ratings at all has been his lack of quality guests. This is because many celebs were pissed Conan was pushing Leno out. If you watched the last few weeks of Leno on the tonight show, there were ALOT of A list celebs saying they would not be back on the show once Leno left and most have kept their word. Hell, Fallon has bigger guests most the time,

BlackCrayon 01-10-2010 10:21 PM

they should have just made leno retire like he was contracted to and move on.

EscortBiz 01-10-2010 10:49 PM

nbc broke the old rule of if it aint broke dont fix

this whole new set looks stupid too

they should put it back EXACTLY how it was same set same times etc

pamon 01-10-2010 11:05 PM

leno's show didn't work at 10. his 1130 slot will be perfect. who knows about conan, hope the best for him. Hoping for a 1205 spot. Move back to NY and do it there. Never got into jimmy fallon

Rangermoore 01-11-2010 12:08 AM

I never liked Conan, I just don't think he is funny at all... His jokes are childish and dry, He does not know how to interview guests.. Not my cup of tea.... :2 cents:

Conan's bad ratings are because Leno sucks. Leno was cancelled because affiliates said their ratings for the news right after Leno was lower since his show started so duh logic would dictates if there are less viewers for the news there are less viewers for the shows that come after the news which is Conan. Trust me if NBC actually had a show worth watching right before the nes that Conan's ratings would be higher. This is all Leno's fault he should have stayed retired instead of pulling a Brett Favre.

No Leno annouced 4 years ago he was retiring in 2009. They named Conan his successor so NBC wouldn't go through all the dram they did when Carson retired. Then Leno pulls this shit with his un-retiring. How is this NBC's fault. LENO is the one that said "Hey I'm retiring in 2009"

wrong

Please read my posts to get CORRECT FACTS.

They both blow. Leno is about as funny as watching grass grow and Conan isn't any funnier. I'd hate to see what that fucker looks like without makeup. His face is cheesier than his jokes. At least Dave was able to bang the assistant.. Conan must have had to suck a lot of dick to get where he's at..

Your *details* are mostly right. Your major assumption, and your conclusion, are wrong.

Conan's deal was up and he was being wooed by the other networks, particularly Fox.
NBC desperately wanted to keep Conan in the 12:35 slot, so in order to keep him they promised him the Tonight show down the road, and then NBC convinced Leno to retire in 2009. That gave them the Leno-Conan pairing for years and years before 2009, and that's what they were after. When 2009 rolled around and Leno was still doing good ratings and wasn't happy about leaving - that's when all the crap started.

So if you're paying attention, that makes it NBC's fault, not Conan's.
Conan's contract was up, NBC said "hey, don't leave, stay in late night for a while and we'll give you a boatload of money and the Tonight Show in 2009. And if we back out on the Tonight Show deal, we'll give you an EXTRA 40-million bucks."

Conan took the deal. I would imagine anyone else would have done the same thing. Just because it was a stupid deal - that doesn't make Conan the bad guy for taking it.

Exactly. And, he is better for the late night anyways. :thumbsup

Domain Diva 01-11-2010 03:31 AM

I also think trying to mix comedy with interviews isnt the greatest format.....

Jay is a comedian (not bad) trying to interview (no good)

Dave is a better interviewer and apart from some good satire..is not really a good stand alone comedian.

Conan....just dont get this guy...

Make a nice interview show for Dave ( simlar to TheHour in Canada :thumbsup)

Give Jay some type of comedy/variety show ....

Conan.....just let him walk....

Solved.

Mutt 01-11-2010 03:40 AM

Both Conan and Letterman should have never left their late late night spots - Letterman was never the same when he went mainstream, and Conan will be the same. You can't do great comedy when you're having to worry about getting ratings from the wide cross-section of people who are still watching TV at 11:30. The 12:30 time slot, all the boring 9 to 5 dolts and old bastards have gone to sleep and the true connoisseurs of great comedy are left in front of the TV, high school kids, college students and dysfunctional people like most in this industry who can stay up til all hours. And you're out of the FCC's safe harbor whatever hours so you can get away with more on network TV.

Pleasurepays 01-11-2010 07:08 AM

Conan was marginally funny as a stand up comic ("the unknown comic").

Tom_PM 01-11-2010 09:05 AM

Let me make it simple. Leno is done. He's a hanger-on now. It's getting to look pathetic. He's into his cars and he should get some car show specials (already has them) and green shows (already done some) and enjoy the autumn years of his life.

dyna mo 01-11-2010 09:35 AM

ContentPimp 01-11-2010 09:45 AM

You gotta be kiddin!

Jakez 01-11-2010 10:01 PM

Wow, so many Conan haters.. wtf? Conan is funny as fuck! Leno is the lame one.

And how come no one has mentioned Carson Daily (sp)? Sure he's the last one on but shit man that's definitely one show too many and he's a COMPLETE fucking tool.

raunchypass 01-11-2010 10:13 PM

It'll be good when he goes back to late night. I didn't really like his new show.

Semi-Retired-Dave 01-11-2010 10:18 PM

I know how to solve the problem, just have Tiger Woods take over the Night Show.

Axeman 01-11-2010 11:07 PM

Conan was on fire tonight. He was banging NBC hard. Even a few good shots at Jay.

Robert Day 01-11-2010 11:33 PM

Didn't Jay Leno and Eminem just die ? lol

pamon 01-11-2010 11:50 PM

nbc loves jay and jay brings ratings to NBC. Conan's stuff lost ratings and Letterman's been kicking Conan's ass in Nielsen ratings. The 10pm failed ratings wise and for advertisers so NBC had to do this. Plus NBC makes more off of ratings with the drama's than NBC will ever make with Leno.

Conan should goto FOX and wave the finger at NBC for screwing him over. Should've kept him at 1230 and in NY. Better in that timespot and location.

Thought Conan was sometimes funny but interviewing wasn't the greatest.
