According to TMZ, Conan O'Brien is leaving The Tonight Show

"Conan O'Brien has made it crystal clear -- he's leaving NBC.

O'Brien just released a candid letter to the "People of Earth," in which he addresses his "personal disappointment" in losing the show. Conan adds, "The Tonight Show at 12:05 simply isn't The Tonight Show."

Regarding the time shift, Conan states, "I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction."

And since he won't take part in a 12:05 Tonight Show -- Conan's only left with one real option ...get outta Dodge. "

Thats fucking weeeeak! I love Conan.. they need to buckle a little bit to his demand.. and our demand.. 12:05 time show? loooool. too late..

I understand him he waited 6 years for the show and now he is kicked off or moved to a later time slot. Frack it and move on probably another network that could use a late night show.

I bet he doesn't quit. he may not take the show at that time slot but he will wait for them to pay him off instead of quitting.

I'm not sure if NBC was ever serious about that offer. I think it's just an offer so that they can argue his contract in court after he leaves saying that they offered him "The Tonight Show" and he decided on his own to leave.

He has some sort of clause where he gets anywhere from 20 to 50 million if he's bumped from the Tonight Show. Also, NBC has to pay him the difference if another network hires him for less. I think NBC is just trying to limit that with this bogus offer.

But who knows?

Leno should just retire, His show sucks anyway.

Whats really fucked up is that carson daly gets pushed even later.

After Jimmy Fallon skipped past Carson Daily in the Late Night follow-up slot to the Tonight Show, Carson changed formats, and quit trying to do the same old late night talk show schtick, and his show improved tremendously (imho).

I feel on the other hand that since Conan took over the Tonight Show he has lost a lot of his edge. Gone are many of the quirky bits that made his show great, such as Joel Goddard, Preparation H Raymond, the FedEx Pope, the Funhole Guy, the Interrupter, the Coked-Up Werewolf, the Masturbating Bear, Pimpbot 5000...hell, even Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, has done only one appearance since Conan moved into his earlier time slot.

The Max Weinberg 7 has toned down their style of music. They were once the best late night band - now I have to give that title to The Roots on Jimmy Fallon's show.

I would like to see Conan and Carson bail to some other station (network or cable), and hopefully Conan will ffel free from having to appeal to Tonight Show demographics, and will return to a more creative original style.

I don't know if Comedy Central has the budget, but it would be cool to see Conan over there. I'm not sure if Fox would be a good fit, unless they gave him free reign, but hey, they are the station of the Simpsons, and are not the same right wing propaganda machine as their Faux News sister network, so why not throw the dice...

As for Jay, he made his big play for primetime and flopped in very short order, displacing some good shows and putting lots of people out of work in the process or caused them to jump networks (Southland moved over to TNT, etc). So I say fuck him for trying to get back the job that Conan waited patiently for years to get.

Jay back at 11:35 for thirty minutes will suck only slightly less than if he gets back his one hour slot at that time, and if he makes no changes to a show that went stale along time ago (if the implausible Jaywalking All-Stars bit is the best he can do), then stick a fork in him, because he is done.

I don't think he said he was leaving. He just drew a line in the sand. You gotta admire a guy that has the juice and balls to stand up to an entire network with the resources of NBC. The guy is my hero. Leno looks so damn lame. He was in town recently playing the Casino circuit. Damn...that is for old soul singers and 80's wash outs.

I totally agree. Conesy has been canned and artificial on the Tonight Show and everything I loved about his show has been absent.

Haven't watched Carson Daly, but that sounds exactly like what I always hoped for if he finally is just doing a show talking about music and chatting with artists (is that it?) instead of trying to be funny, which he really is not.

So, Trix, you haven't commented on the lack of estrogen in late night tv. Or did I miss it?

It will be interesting to see if he goes to Fox or ABC. If so I hope he goes back to being like he was before taking over the Tonight Show

Jay Leno will bow out. He is an unselfish man, a class act, & he knows it will hurt his Q factor even more if he moves back to 11:30. its not gonna happen.

This is all a ploy to boost conan's stock.

i support conan. it's b.s. what nbc is doing because conan is different and less uptight and corporate than jay. i like the self deprecating and pervy jokes, and at least you know conan knows about hip current day events. whatever happens i'll be watching conan and his fans will follow.

i hope joshgirls is correct and he does bow out maybe he'll earn some respect back. in the meantime, here's a little cartoon i made of jay... big baby.

Seriously: interested if any photographers understand what I'm talking about with that annoying set.

Maybe it's weird but I totally don't miss it. I must be too old and the late night paradigm is a dude in a suit. Tried watching Wanda Sykes new show and really wanted to like it but it was just awkward. Jimmy Kimmel and a little of Dave is all I've enjoyed lately.
