Avatar and James Cameron win

The Golden Globes are usually a preview of what goes down at the Oscars, so next month the results may be the same. Impressive.

The Demon 01-17-2010 10:07 PM

He deserved it.

Iron Fist 01-17-2010 10:10 PM

Pretty impressive... that man controls Hollywood.

weekly 01-17-2010 10:11 PM

I just saw it. Its another Titanic. Once its out of 3d it has hit its sell by date. Banal script, mediocre actors. It was entertaining because of the technical shit, but it did not amaze me. Personally, I think three hundred thousand dollar movies with great scripts would have advanced film making a lot more.
This will be a dust collector by next year.
What I do admire James Cameron for, is his business capabilities. He is the Billy Mays of Hollywood.

Probably not, but not bad for a small town Canadian boy.

Dust Collector? Hardly. The script was amazing. It wasn't original. It wasn't Shawshank. It wasn't Green Mile. However, it was unbelievable in its own right and with the graphics included, it made for an unforgettable movie. That's just my opinion. As far as a dust collector? Look for it to be the biggest DVD seller of all time, and rightfully so.

You're probably right.

http://failblog.org/2010/01/10/avatar-plot-fail

It was enjoyable in 3D though. Everyone saw Titanic 10x when it was popular, but I haven't heard anyone watching it since then.

Because Titanic was tailored for prepubescent, socially inept females. This movie is for everybody.

Not only did Avatar make gobs of money, it also broke new technical / cinematic ground. He deserves every ounce of that award :) Pocahontas rehash story notwithstanding.

Are you sure it's pocahontas? Is it conceivable that Cameron just created a story that's been used before? It's hard to believe that the greatest filmmaker in history has to resort to rehashing plots.

It will indeed especially if 3D TV's take off... http://www.cnn.com/2009/TECH/09/18/3...ion/index.html

Zuzana Designs 01-17-2010 10:25 PM

I just watched it today. It was awesome! The colors were awesome and the story was great.

It might be a dvd success at the beginning...prolly not. Revisit this thread in a year. It is a dust collector. Its not a good movie. Titanic won all kinds of awards and it was a total crap movie. Same thing applies. Cameron has an amazing talent to bamboozle critics and audiences alike. But like I said, he is one of the greatest pitchmen of all time and for that he gets a lot of respect. But dude....the script was shit...just replace Jake with Jack and a planet for a ship and a battle for an iceberg and Leonardo di Capocolo with some guy who sounds like he was singin' doo wap on a street corner last week and whaddaya got??? Aavatanic....
I know I am swimming upstream on this one, but I laughed at the dialogue, just like I did in Titanic, and all those critics that were kiss Cameron's ass went really silent in the first year after its premiere. King Kong was more ground breaking than this piece of cinema history...historical for making money and some video game effects....

Hmmm. If I ever made a big time feature film, the last thing I would want someone to say about it was....."the colours were awsome". Damn.

The Demon 01-17-2010 10:30 PM

It's not a good movie according to YOU bro. By your logic, every movie is shit, you just have to find the right angle to nit pick.

King Kong was pure shit btw.

King Kong was shit? In 1933 it was scarey and huge. Ground breaking film making. Your opinion kinda suffers when you say something like that.
I bet you thought Orson Wells was a shit director and Citizen Kane was a movie of the week.

SomeCreep 01-17-2010 10:51 PM

Titanic and Terminator 2 were awesome movies. Avatar more or less sucked. It was cool watching it in Real 3D once, but other than that, the plot was weak and predictable. The characters were all elementary and superficial. Overall, not a very stimulating movie.

NaughtyRob 01-17-2010 11:20 PM

Just got home from watching it. Epic movie, very good in all aspects.

Nysus 01-17-2010 11:22 PM

I need to go watch it again.

This will be a movie they'll keep putting back in theatres for showings in 3D.

I think you are right. Its only saving grace is three d.

beta-tester 01-17-2010 11:50 PM

Honestly I liked this movie a lot. The script is really good and the effects and the actors are even better. SO he deserves to get awards definitely!

StarCash 01-18-2010 01:24 AM

Nice, I love the movie, watched it a couple weeks ago in 3d

Just as your opinion suffers when you talk down Avatar.

He will make a killing on all his new movie making inventions he made for this movie.

roxxx 01-18-2010 07:56 AM

i saw the movie yesterday. I liked it, but didn't impressed me so much as i thought.

But the jury is still out on avatar. It will take at least a year to settle. Avatar is like cheap Champagne. The first glass tastes ok, but by the end of the bottle, you wonder why you bought it.

Cameron didn't really create the story. He "borrowed" it from somewhere else, just like the rest of Hollywood.

http://io9.com/5390226/did-james-cam...ersons-novella

Regardless, Avatar rocked.

Scott McD 01-18-2010 09:18 AM

Still haven't seen it. And to be honest, i'm kinda sick hearing about it already anyway...

Pedro Pink Robot 01-18-2010 09:22 AM

I think I'll get all my savings and give to James Cameron to invest.

sperbonzo 01-18-2010 09:47 AM

I can't believe anyone thought that this was a good script. The visuals were amazing and groundbreaking, but the script was SO full of tired cliches and worn out stereotypes that I was on the verge of leaving, and Vino actually fell asleep for the last 45 minutes.

I find it hard to believe that anyone older than a teenager couldn't see these problems, but then I overestimate people all the time.

Its a movie like MacDonald's is a restaurant.

gandalfuy 01-18-2010 10:33 AM

It's a nice movie but that's about it. A movie won't get my vote just because of its effects. It's the Avatar story that didn't fulfill all the expectations.

She is a designer and a talented one. People with an affinity for visual arts absolutely LOVED this movie and I was one of them but of course that's not the only reason, there are too many to list.

OK, just list a couple. Let me try....its pretty...it is a serious step in blending games and films...animated characters have moved to a new level of realism...

But so have video games. My problem is that this movie is so full of tricks, it never suspends disbelief. That is the primary goal of entertainment and judging by what most have posted here, this movie fails on that level.

InternetIsForPorn 01-18-2010 11:08 AM

Avatar was amazing in all aspects. So the story isn't original - so what?

However, my movie of the year is Zombieland.

Lykos 01-18-2010 11:57 AM

They will win for sure.

Exactly, so it wasn't original. I guess everyone has a different taste. This movie really grabbed me like none before. But I understand that it's no Shawshank, Green Mile, Braveheart, etc.
