What supplements / protein after workout

So this month I started a new workout regime, the purpose of which is to bulk up. I am going to give it a try for a year and see what results I can achieve.

I hear that you should drink a protein shake within 45 mins of the end of your workout. What do you guys recommend.

Also are there any other supplements I should be taking?

Eggs, chicken breast, and fish are often the basis of a weight-gaining regiment. I was talking to a body-builder the other day about how much fish he was consuming per day, and he said it was around 1lb per day.

He looked pretty damn good.

None, just eat healthy with lots of Protein :)

Within 45 minutes, I take Optimum Nutrition Protein. Also, if you really need a good pump and don't care about being natural, take NO Xplod before working out, so you get an extra pump.

For bulking up the most important thing to be careful and you probably know them are :
1. Good nutritions
I am taking myself rich protein shakes 40 minutes after the training process combined with some fruits for vitamins . Also dont forget to take omega 3.6.7.9 rich oils such as : salmon oil, pumpkin seed oil, flax seed oil etc.
As somebody mentioned dont base yourself too much on fabricated proteins if you have time to prepare your own food , for ex ( soy milk or rice milk with all kinds of cereals, fruits and nuts in the mornings . Fish, turkey or chicken for lunch with fresh salads and avoid salt after 8pm .

2. The excersises ( In order to gain weight faster but my advice is dont push yourself too much both with food and the exercises you will have to make few repetitions with bigger weights and group the exercisesin such way that you will have at least 72- 100 hours rest for the trained group muscles . In other ways avoid too much exercising .
Also you dont push on cardio exercises or make cardios on separate hours cause u may loose some weight cause of them .

Go the slow but sure way and u will do ok in time .

Carbs are better than protein right after the work-out...you should eat protein in your food 1 hour after work-out or so.

Right after workout, the best is creatine, glutamine along with glukose. Glutamin is 60% of the muscle amino anyway, glukose will take care of the missing carbs and creatine will help you to regenerate faster.

Just not right after the work-out...the liver wouldn't enjoy that.

The Demon 01-18-2010 06:37 AM

The omegas are usually taken before a meal.

Yeap i didn't mentioned that , omega oils for me work the best in the mornings as detoxificators .

It's pretty much low carb high protein, and it's pretty damn cheap if you calculate the $$ per serving and total # of servings. I use that plus 3 tablets of fish oil daily.

They are not worth it. The body can't use much of them and you would need to take insane amounts to see some results. They are only good during a diet, when you don't want to eat much calories, but still need amimos not to lose muscle.

If you drink it after work-out, try to mix some glukose with it...or even better maltodextrin, then its like a regular meal with all the protein and carbs.

bronco67 01-18-2010 08:28 AM

Myoplex is great, but one thing most people never think of is using a good green drink. Have at least one green drink per day(Garden of Life makes a good one). To make it taste better, you can mix in some fruit smoothie.

I like taking a 50/50 mix of malto/dextrose. There is a lot of controversy over "waxymaize starch" and it's ability to absorb quickly. I've tried it, and admittedly it is lighter on the stomach but I went back to the basics.

I agree, BCAA drinks are good to sip on if you are on a calorie deficient diet, or prepping for a contest. The thing is almost all protein shakes already have all the aminos ya need.

I go with the Cookies n Cream. Mix some berries and crap in there and you got one hell of a post workout shake.

Jon Oso 01-18-2010 02:23 PM

when I was cutting i was eating boneless skinless chicken breast, rice, pb sammiches, protein shakes and not much else.

when I was bulking, i ate the above + everything else I could get my hands on.

If you're truly trying to bulk don't worry about a little excess fat you put on - that's what cutting is for.

beerptrol 01-18-2010 02:44 PM

I drink a 40 oz before and after...sometime during a work out

fatfoo 01-18-2010 02:56 PM

I am still in the process of losing fat.

I was cutting with fat...worked like a charm. No carbs, obviously. :)
