The Adam and the Ants videos weren't even that bad.

I love ones like this one which are from the period when video was too new and they didn't know what to do with it. Watch the hands of the guy in the button down shirt. He clearly didn't know what to do with them and so walks with them clenched the whole time.

Devo was part of the same sort of movement that gave us the Talking Heads. Folks that were performance artists that were exploring what could be done with the medium of video. They were also slightly nuts.
