5.8 happened in ca a year ago or so while i was there, first time I felt a quake and it was fucked up, but because lots of the building code was updated after the 94 quake damage was minimal

Yeah, 5.8 in CA is not so bad with good building codes but in places that are not used to earthquakes and don't have the same rigorous building codes they can be pretty bad.

You're right, this time last year we were already at 8.

Cue all the assholes asking for help in aid for the Caymans. I am sure CECash is working on his post now.

Brad Mitchell 01-19-2010 10:07 AM

That's pretty wild, I can't say that I've ever heard of an earthquake there before.

pornguy 01-19-2010 01:21 PM

Had a Quake in Central Mexico yesterday evening.

Hotrocket 01-19-2010 02:09 PM

had a 4.1 yesterday in northern New Mexico about 170 miles northeast of Albuquerque.

JenniDahling 01-19-2010 02:13 PM

Thank goodness the Caymans are a lot more resilient to acts of nature and their government has a lot more money than Haiti. Was there a couple years ago after a series of hurricanes had flattened the landscape, but because of all the foreign money they have, they were able to get things rolling again.

Other places in the Caribbean wouldn't fare as well, Honduras and Belize are also pretty poor countries, hopefully they'll be safe from any siesmic activity.

meanguy7 01-19-2010 02:27 PM

I hope all of my money is OK....

Elli 01-19-2010 02:27 PM

With all our technology, we're really still stuck on this chunk of rock that we have pretty much no control over. It's humbling.
