I have become what I hate.

I have said recently that the internet and cell phones are killing communication. People don't talk anymore. Attention spans are now so short that a video over 20 seconds is too long. A message longer than a twitter is too much.

People don't read books just to enjoy language or watch a movie just to see someone who is great at their craft do their thing.

And so Sunday was the Golden Globe awards. I didn't want to watch the whole thing, I was busy with other stuff. Today between Youtube, the NBC site and the Golden Globe's site I saw the monologue, read the list of winners and watched the 3-4 acceptance speeches I wanted to see. I watched everything I wanted to see from the 3 hour broadcast in about 10 minutes. I even found myself fast forwarding the videos of the acceptance speeches so I could skip them walking up and just hear what they had to say.

Today I have officially become what I hate.

Soon I will be that bastard who has too many items in the express checkout lane at the store, the guy who takes forever at the ATM and the prick who brings his dog everywhere he goes even though the dog will bark and growl and try to bite everyone it sees. :)

Reality is perception - angry man lives in an angry world, the sad man lives in a sad world, and the happy man lives in a happy world.

Remember you always have a choice which world you want to live in :thumbsup

True. And I embrace technology. But I knew things were going downhill when on new years eve I was hanging out with some friends and one of them read something funny and actually said, "OMG that is so funny!" I said, "Did you just say OMG?" She said, "Yeah, it stands for Oh My God." And she looked at me like I was from another planet for thinking it was strange.

LOL

I was having dinner with some friends tonight who are all my age and many of them have kids that are now getting into their early teens. The kids are texting, IMing, Facebooking machines. We were joking around saying that we are starting to get old because there is now an entire generation of kids we don't understand.

I have 2, one who was 3 on Monday, the other 4 weeks old. I don't understand them already.

I've had it.

I'm noticing the same thing in my life at the moment. Just a few years ago I would read at least 2 good books a month. Last year it was 1 book every two months. This year has started and it looks like it will go down to 1 book in 6 months, lol.
That's just books. Everything else looks like your post too.

themadwriter 01-20-2010 03:34 AM

that sucks man. good luck working that out!

Classic.

What is the problem? You saved yourself 2 hours and 50 minutes which leaves you plenty of time to do things like read a book or go for a walk. If your time on twitter isn't really business related then maybe you should consider dropping it.

calvinawe 01-20-2010 05:17 AM

it's not a matter of age, it's the times we are living in nowadays. everything is hasty, everyone is impatient. it's getting more difficult to remain laid-back, even if you are 40 or twenty-something.

I actually don't really twitter. I am looking into it as a marketing tool though. I don't text unless I absolutely have to (which means about 1-2 texts ever few months). I am actually happy I got to see everything I wanted to see in just a few minutes. The ability to do that taught me a business lesson that I hope to apply to my own business. What annoyed me about myself was when I was watching the winner speech videos which were only about 2 minutes long at most. The first 10-15 seconds is them walking up and getting the award. I was fast forwarding past that. After doing that a few times I thought, " I can't even wait 10 seconds for them to walk up to the microphone?"

It was eye opening.

That sucks man...there's no way back?

Altwebdesign 01-20-2010 05:57 AM

I tried reading a book the other day and couldnt get passed 3-4 pages, it made me think about when i was 13-15 years old and could just read and read and read, no mobile phones no internet. todays technology has really affected my attentionspan, something i need to work on!

CaptainHowdy 01-20-2010 06:04 AM

I call it the microwave mentality. When we got microwaves, it was a huge step over cooking in an oven for hours and hours. Now we stand in front of the microwave when it's set to warm something for 1 minute and say "come on! come on! hurry up!". We forget easily, but adapt quickly too.

fsckr 01-20-2010 10:17 AM

Errr...Irony?

Did you 'say' this on the internet or over your cell phone? :1orglaugh

That is a very good analogy.

I'm still pretty young (24) but I can still remember back to the time when there were no cell phones and no internet. It's so weird to think about kids today never knowing a time where they didn't have access to this kind of technology.

It always bums me out when I see people sitting around at a coffee shop or something with their friends, with 2 of them on their laptops, and the rest of them texting on their iphones. :(

Granted I've met a lot of cool people on the internet I would not have known otherwise

PurrrsianPussyKat 01-20-2010 02:26 PM

Think of all the life you saved not watching the entire golden globes. :winkwink:

Welcome to the darkside. We are all in trouble once youtube allows picture in picture content... wait a sec... that is a good idea.

KILL_FRENZY 01-20-2010 06:57 PM

That's absolutely right. In nature things speed up and slow down using some type of exponential multiplication.

For example: What took hours 15 years ago can be done in 20 minutes max now and it'll be done in 5 minutes 5 years from now and in 1 minute max 5 years after that...especially sex :1orglaugh And time in the bathroom works opposite to that.

fatfoo 01-20-2010 07:18 PM

Attention spans are very short. Sometimes you can just say 3 words, "I love you."
