According to the interview, it's not the physical danger per se (it's been argued to be very minimal) the effectiveness of this "interrogation assistance method" is that it forces your brain to go into a fearful hyperdrive because it triggers fear of drowning.

i don't think the question is whether this is torture or not - the question is if you condone it

i've got no problem with this being used on gernuine terrorists, but in some cases how do you know they are terrorists until you torture them. and you're also crossing a dangerous line of state sponsored torture, where does it stop, i.e. suspected criminals etc.

When the sensation of water entering your nostrils arrives to your brain, a primordial survival instinct kicks in. It completely overrides the logical/experiential side of your brain.
