Paying a domain with paypal, money back garantee?
 

Im going to pay someone for a domain, upfront, with paypal.

How long do i have to get my money back if the guy doesnt transfer me the domain?
What steps should i take to make sure im not working with a scammer beforehand?

I'd suggest you contact Paypal before hand. Simply email them proof of the domain name you're buying (from the email address of the person you're sending money to) and if he doesn't push the domain you should have more than enough evidence to get your money back.

It's pretty logical and simple, plus I don't think Paypal is going to say that there isn't enough grounds for a refund.

Google his nickname and paypal email, check how old the account is if its business/premier and number of successful transactions. If you want to go further and feel more secure pay for a escrow service.

Very risky. Even accepting payment for a domain through Paypal is risky in the event the person is using a hacked or fraudulent account.

I think you have 30-45 days to charge back. If he is on these boards ask him for some references...

I make people send me a detailed invoice to my paypal account...then I pay using this.

You can probably use paypal and get away with it ... it depends on the size of the transaction imho.

Steps to take -- make sure the person actually owns the domain you want, and further that they have given you valid contact information that is consistent with linkedin/xing/facebook/whois/ and other information.

Since I mostly buy domains, I generally research the person on linkedin/xing/facebook/whois to ensure they are a real person -- after that it depends on whether you want to spend the money for escrow or not.

you can start your own service to help buyers and sellers make sure the other party is legit.

In my opinion buyers have the advantage using paypal...since they can charge back funds...in which the seller can lose the domain name and the funds.

The last 2 times I spent over 1k on domains I used moniker escrow paying with a cc and the 2nd time I used paypal since the person was a well known domainer in the industry. The most I spent on a domain selling on GFY was $425 for a tube domain...used paypal.
You also need to be careful who you give your domain registers account # to...your giving away half the security.

I dont know why you wouldn't have the domain pushed before you pay unless you're a scammer yourself. I wouldn't risk any amount of money in a transfer like that unless someone has a mark-less reputation when it comes to transactions, etc.
