Mavericks - It's ON!!! Crazy Big Waves...

http://www.surfersvillage.com/img/st...SCOTT2-pop.jpg

It was just announced today that one of the great spectacles in surfing will take place this weekend, here in the Bay Area, near Half Moon Bay...it is simply referred to as Mavericks.

Here is the link to the official website for Mavericks.

Quote:

Mavericks is a world-renowned big wave break located one-half mile off the coast of Half Moon Bay, California.

Since the early 1990s, when the local spot was introduced to the world, Mavericks has become an epicenter of modern big-wave surfing, attracting elite riders to test its limits (and theirs) each time it rears its awe-inspiring head. With waves cresting as high as 50 feet, ridiculously strong currents, dangerous rocks, perilously shallow reefs, and bone-chilling water temperatures, Mavericks is like no other place on Earth.

Each winter, during a waiting period typically set for sometime between November and March ? if and when conditions are perfect, and giant swells roll in from far across the Pacific ? The Mavericks Surf Contest® is held. On just 24 hours notice, two dozen of the surfing community?s bravest and most skillful souls assemble to confront the thundering mountain of salt water many consider to be the most dangerous wave Mother Nature has ever concocted.
This should give you some flavor of the event...

Most deaths in extreme sports are caused by mistakes, mistakes brought on by fear, which brings in doubts, making people second guess themselves, making the mind think when it should be focused... fear kills you.

A few. But those are not waves you just decide to go out in one day on a whim unless you are completely insane. The pros don't want inexperienced people out there and they keep them out. Same with Jaws. Mavericks can be paddled in to, but Jaws cannot. You have to be whipped into Jaws with a jetski, or be on a wind rig, so that alone eliminates the possibility of dumb shits killing themselves.

I've heard of one death at Mavericks and that was pro surfer Mark Foo several years ago.

Nobody saw what really happened. He fell on a big wave and it's suspected he hit his head and went unconscious which caused him to drown. It took several minutes for anyone to discover what had happened and his body was later found up by the rocks so there was no chance for CPR.

I've been surfing for over thirty years and surfed all over but never progressed to big wave surfing. I do know that these guys are doing incredible things and I can't think of any other extreme sport that rivals it except those psychos that base jump and then fly along the mountainside in their squirrel suits.:upsidedow

tranza 02-12-2010 10:58 AM

That wave is insane!

Semi-Retired-Dave 02-12-2010 11:26 AM

That's insane. Never seen waves like that in California.
