If porn is dead then why does it pay more than adsense?

At least it appears that way to me.

From my experience, when dividing the total money earned by the total
unique hits to the web page, porn pays more.

I always feel like, "man, if only I could put adsense on my porn site, I would make so
much money from clicks". But when I look at my mainstream sites with adsense and
do the actual pay per visitor, porn wins every time.

Anyone else have the opposite happening?

On another note:

A youtube video that has 100k views seems to be worth only $40-$80 total!!!!
When I get a message about some money for something to do with one of
my videos, it's never more than that and I saw an ebay auction for a youtube
video with over 300k views and the bidding ended under $50.
I think this video would not qualify for the youtube partner program so that
may(emphasis on may) explain the low bids on ebay.

Why would anyone buy a youtube video you may ask.
Well, if you are producing music and are in the youtube audio swap catalog then
you would like to buy those videos and audio swap to your own music tracks
and take the audio swap money. I figure these "swappers" know exactly what
these videos are paying since they probably have 10's-100's-1000's of
swapped videos to do the math with.

I haven't gotten any offers that would even make me care.
I swapped to a song I liked and passed up the offer to swap for pay!!!!

I mean, why care about $40 audio swap when you can make a gallery and get
multiple $40 sign ups with the same effort?

Maybe I'm missing something. Help me out here if you know the "low-down".

Thats YOUR experience. I have sponsors I make like 8 cents a click on when you add it up, and with adsense I have seen unreal numbers that blow away porn conversions.

it really depends what you are targetting with adsense to be honest.

marketsmart 02-14-2010 09:24 AM

i average $22.36 per 1000 impressions with adsense on mainstream.....

my sites are very targeted though....

I do not think that porn is dead.

Well if I had those numbers then I would be ok with it too.
I get no where close to your numbers in all the years adsense was available.
You got better ads on your sites.

I guess you mean I should build a mainstream site that is likely to get the
ads that pay. Google decides on which ads to show on my site so in that
scenario, making a mainstream dating site is probably better than a mainstream
poetry site.

I can see that.

edit :

Yeah, now that I thought about that for a few seconds, I could
probably build a crappy site with "proposed" house building layouts
and make better money because all the real estate ads would appear.

yutenjiboy 02-14-2010 09:43 AM

Of course the content and the type of ads displayed (and how well targeted they are will play a big part.

Porn is far from dead. As long as there are penises there will be porn. The delivery may change but it will always be there. It is a matter of evolving to keep ahead of that change.

Adsense is very dynamic, you can earn from 5 cents per click to 100$ per click. It's depending on niche.

Would have been cool with a normal size pic and more impressive if you
posted your own check.

8 cents a click for mainstream is pretty poor. though ppc is poor in general these days i have sites that get 5 dollars per click. its all about what keywords you target. yahoo's feed is much better than adsense though...

woj 02-14-2010 11:52 AM

you are promoting wrong niches, 8 cents per click is nothing with adsense... :2 cents:

I only use adsense on a couple sites that I run purely as a hobby. They get pretty decent traffic but aren't very resource intensive, so I use shared hosting for them. Off those two sites, I generally make about $110 a year from the ads, which pays for the hosting and domain names. Not a lot really, but it allows me to basically run them for free.

Agreed. Depends on the Niche. Debt Consolidation and forex, are just two adsense niches that get FAT $ per click and if the content is positioned right/composed right and the traffic filtered correctly, it doesn't take much traffic to get nice fat clicks.

Adsense revenues focused on low priced niches using generalized content, on the other hand, are quite low.

CyberHustler 02-14-2010 01:15 PM

Last year I thought I was going to get rich from adsense... that thought is long gone. Adsense money slowed way down for me. Still, I make more money with adsense than any porn.

That makes total sense to me. My mainstream sites have no targeting to anything
like forex etc....

I've only dabbled in A.S. as a hobby on some mainstream sites. My main bread and butter is still porn. Sorry champ.

kada 02-14-2010 02:03 PM

i think they both pay well.. i make good money in both. Adsense is longterm/slower & porn is quicker/less steady...
It doesnt matter which u pick.. u can make good cash in both.

pornguy 02-14-2010 10:24 PM

Adsense is tricky when you get started. but once you learn it you can bank

Emil 02-15-2010 06:42 AM

One of my mainstream sites with 1k/day gives me $13k each month. Most from Adsense but I got some other sponsors too.

Much more than I ever would get from 30k adult visitors.
