Is it theatre or theater?

How do you guys write the word theatre, as in home theatre or home theater?

I asked both usa and uk peeps, and nobody seems to agree. Added a poll to see what comes up!

Thanks.

Please include in your reply if you are from the usa/canada/uk or another country!

Depends on which way your cock hangs, left or right ;)

I spell it theater. But I have seen it spelled both ways and never understood the point in it.

They don't agree because it is different in American English vs British English. Hence, both are correct.

Now that is true. They are also used differently. When I was a teenager in America I worked at a movie theater where people went to see a movie.. When I moved here I now go to the cinema to see a film.

Heck, the UK spell check on firefox doesn't even think movie is a word.

Theatre is mostly used for a place where plays are staged.

I use "theater" unless I'm felling particularly uppity at the time.

I spell it both ways. Always have, probably always will.

J. Falcon 02-17-2010 11:21 AM

Is it center or centre? They are both correct, depending on whether you use British or American english

SimpleJack 02-17-2010 11:25 AM

Alot of times Theatre is used for stage performances. Live Theatre.
