Is it theatre or theater?
 

How do you guys write the word theatre, as in home theatre or home theater?

I asked both usa and uk peeps, and nobody seems to agree. Added a poll to see what comes up!

I spell it theater. But I have seen it spelled both ways and never understood the point in it.

They don't agree because it is different in American English vs British English. Hence, both are correct.

Now that is true. They are also used differently. When I was a teenager in America I worked at a movie theater where people went to see a movie.. When I moved here I now go to the cinema to see a film.

Heck, the UK spell check on firefox doesn't even think movie is a word.

Theatre is mostly used for a place where plays are staged.

I use "theater" unless I'm felling particularly uppity at the time.

Is it center or centre? They are both correct, depending on whether you use British or American english
