Women's downhill: I don't remeber seeing this many crashes before

Is it just me or are there a lot more wipeouts than usual?

I can't believe i actually considered doing this years ago!

mmcfadden 02-17-2010 08:06 PM

Must be a fast course. Watching a little here and there. Waiting to see more of the mens halfpipe though. Carrot top fuckin rocks it!

Agent 488 02-17-2010 08:08 PM

fucking icefest this year.

Got Porn? 02-17-2010 08:08 PM

They said its the fastest course since the '92 Olympics

Elli 02-17-2010 08:10 PM

Yeah it's super icy out there. It seems to be a bad mix of ice and slush. The poor women couldn't even get through the snowboard cross course yesterday :(

That and it looks like the course changes so much between morning training and afternoon runs, sun to shade, cold to warmer etc. Like skiing a new course every time you run it...:Oh crap

kristin 02-17-2010 08:25 PM

And another one ...

Peter Romero 02-17-2010 08:45 PM

Many reasons:

1. Snow: Too many changes in temperature and lots of rain turned to ice = ruts everywhere.

2. No new snow: they just scrape off that new stuff and get back down to the ice because it's faster.

3. Flat light: no-one can see where they are going.

4. The course is all turns especially at the bottom. It's more like a Super-Super G race.

5. So much pressure to do good = alot of people taking huge risks because it's do or die.

I used to race/compete in 2 things that were very different but very similar: Moguls and downhill. They are both described as "As fast as posible, chaos right on the verge of being totally out of control" = lotsa crashes.

So much adrenaline running through your veins - it's a total rush and that helps keep your body stiff and strong. But not everone is so lucky. If you hit anything at 60-80 MPH shit's gonna break and that aint pretty. Downhill tucking is illegal @ most resorts making it very hard to practice @ high speeds. But, if you are cool (bribe $$$) with the ski patrol and you get out on the hills before the lifts open you can go balls to the wall relatively safely. We did "The Wall" @ Kirkwood at 8 AM when the lifts were closed in 3-4 turns the whole mountain. The G-force from a compression @ 80+ is enough to push your breakfast up to your throat. I look back now and I'm like: "What the fuck were we thinking?" and I wanna do it again. Adrenaline is the best drug in the world and totally natural. But hitting trees is bad.

Yeah it has, the tricks they are coming up with are crossing over into other events as well, for instance, moguls. Its weird, a new to the Olympic sport is inspiring others to step it up a bit. It's about time.
