The only thing I hate about My Macbook pro is...

... Yeah I love the damn thing. But Adium Sucks! It's like the Trillian for Mac, but it's support of ICQ is terrible!

Nomatter what I do, it Orphans most of my ICQ contacts, and changes their name back to an ICQ number. I can only find maybe 20% of who I look for these days!

Does anyone have an alternative to Adium for ICQ on the Mac?

candyflip 02-18-2010 09:52 AM

Check this one out.

Actually, just noticed that they haven't released the Mac version yet.

Trilian Astra is also in testing for OSX. It's not a finished product, but it is available for download.

icq is fucker

VirtualAdultAgent 02-18-2010 10:57 AM

Every program I have used for MAC fucks icq contacts except the actual ICQ program. I just took the time in Adium to manually update the names with get info and changing the alias locally.

kmanrox 02-18-2010 11:09 AM

my adium works fine.. the only thing i dont like is when i cant find the Auth box...

munki 02-18-2010 11:11 AM

I wish Adium had skype support, otherwise it handles pretty well on my macbook pro.

arachnO 02-18-2010 12:04 PM

I like my Adium :)
I can run normal ICQ at my other laptops (I already work at 2 notebooks), but why for? Adium is nice :)

mpahlca 02-18-2010 12:07 PM

http://blog.ceruleanstudios.com/?p=464 just use trillian for web then system doesnt matter.

Adam X 02-18-2010 01:39 PM

icq for mac is an old version, they dont update it.. but it works good on my macbook

Babaganoosh 02-18-2010 01:44 PM

The worst part about the Macbook is being forced to wear the "Mac user" moniker that immediately makes people think you're a dick in Buddy Holly glasses blogging about your cat from Starbucks.

JP513 02-18-2010 01:57 PM

Adium isn't great, but part of the problem is ICQ sucks on Mac anyway. Maybe webmasters should consider abandoning the platform.

Yeah, I did that too. but every day i get contacts pushed into an "orphan" category for no reason, and they lose their attached names:(

Lol, I was actually in starbucks today with mine. Funny, I used to stereotype people the same way. But this damn thing just works. I've had less learning curve with this than I thought I would. Very few issues.. ICQ being one of them.

I hate to lose my contacts, but i suppose I should start clearing out the dead weight and maybe my adium just hit a query limit with ICQ servers or something?

Yeah, this is an option. I never liked the trillian for web platform when I was on windows. Not being able to initiate/receive file transfers or video calls was a big issue for me.

Sharky 02-21-2010 09:38 PM

whoa. looks like trillian just released a Mac version in Alpha testing;-)

http://www.trillian.im/learn/tour-mac.html

I am going to have to give this a shot

Brujah 02-21-2010 10:08 PM

Just click on Adium window, and start typing someone's name. Try one letter, or two, or more and you should see them show up.

Yeah, that doesn't work if they are saved as a number, not a name

Sharky 02-21-2010 10:45 PM

OK, trillian for mac looks promising. but no history... and more importantly when a message comes in, i can hear it.. but not see it! lol

Farang 02-21-2010 11:28 PM

Why don't you just install win7 on your mac? It supports more software and stuff

Sharky 02-21-2010 11:48 PM

lol, wasn't the point of going mac to get rid of windows?

This is the only problem I have with Mac. it's just annoying.

sandman! 02-21-2010 11:53 PM

it seem 95% of the time someone is not getting my icq messages they are using one of the crappy icq knockoffs

KillerK 02-22-2010 03:23 AM

Run a vmware slice on your mac with windows and then run trillian in that.

cheekycherry 02-22-2010 04:06 AM

time to get with the times and get skype

Sharky 02-22-2010 04:30 AM

I have skype:-)

I run Crossover and thought about running trillian in that, but want to try and stay away from running windows apps on my Mac.

Cleo 02-22-2010 05:06 AM

There are two versions of Adium. The beta version is much better than the regular released version. Try giving Adium 1.4b17 a try.

Thurbs 02-22-2010 05:36 AM

icq a relic ... i pretty much gave up on it after 2 errors that stopped 2 numbers from working.

shouldn't the industry move on to say google talk at this point , video / chat / voice .... no software needed through gmail and it works well, based on jabber ...

Hi Cleo!

I am actually using the beta version you mentioned.
I've started looking into the Debug logs and it looks like the iCQ servers are rejecting the queries because of too many lookups. grr...

I tried changing the ICQ server it was querying and got more of the same.

@Thurbs - I'm with you. I don't use Google talk that much, but my messenger of choice these days is skype.

Brujah 02-22-2010 10:15 AM

I'd also like to see the movement away from ICQ gain steam. Probably 99% of my contacts are all using it though. Maybe a big percentage of them would like to switch too.

GTS Mark 02-22-2010 10:27 AM

Adium sucks balls, i hardly ever use it anymore. :(
