How much does a complicated civil law suit cost?

How much does a complicated law suit cost? I've taken 2 people that fucked me to small claims court (it costs less than $100 here but there is a $6,000 cap on what you can win) and it was great. I've never been to big-boy court. Is it a giant pain in the ass? Is that why you guys allow your content to be stolen?

If you win, the other party has to pay all your legal expenses.

Heh...yeah it is a huge pain in the ass. You need to find an attorney who will do this for the backend pay rather than your paying them up front, otherwise you can expect to pay an easy 40K to just get the ball rolling. But to make it worth it the civil suit will have to be for a big six figure number (perhaps even 7 figures), and honestly the other side will simply drag the case out for years and hope that you will go bankrupt and cannot continue the case, as if often the case when a small guy goes against a big guy.

I would suggest seeking other means to solve the problem.

true but the hard part is getting the money if the losing party has nothing in the first place...

ie: assets , or anything

either way lawyers always win heheh

Nice, in theory.

Veryyyyy min $50k

it really depends on the kind of suit but to see a case through and also deal with an appeal and expert testimony etc. is 6-figures

if you cant find a guy to take it on in exchange for a hefty % your case is mostlikly weak

Just like other things in life... if you have to ask you cant afford it...

Seriously, I would say on average $50k. Easy to get up to $100K if you need expert witness testimony and more than $250k if its complex litigation. And thant could be just in costs. If you are paying hourly fees double those estimates.

I just hired an expert in a copyright case -- his fee alone is $25,000. By the time I get to trial the client will have spent more than $50,000 just in costs on this case. And this is a pretty easy infringement case.
