Is Vegas Dead?
Just curious what others thought about Sin City at this point. Seems like its dying hard and fast. Other than the economy here is another real reason the place is heading to the gutter...
Back in the day you could get some pretty sweet deals in Vegas if you gambled a little and even if you didn’t, things were reasonable. Now they try and rape you every angle they can. The clubs are a joke and it’s all because they got greedy. Its classic greed. They should give it back to the Mob, the corps drove it to the ground. I take my money to Cabo San Lucas Mex any day over a shit whole in the dessert. Just my two cents :) |
they still give me everything comped for gambling

Sure, give it back to the mob.... you can trade the money you win in for keeping your knees and hands.
Vegas if full of comps, if you want more comps, start playing playing the tables and play bigger hands. Also, get off the strip, hit fremont street, even the sun coast casinos, all of them will comp you with free food, hotel, extra stays, everything legal. It's all a game, not just the gambling. |
Las Vegas is a shit hole.
It was horrible even back when every one was making money hand over fist in the real estate game. Atleast then every one was happy they could finally afford a new beamer after they took a 2nd out on their home and sucked out all the equity. I would hate to be there now that everyone is miserable and they just foreclosed on that house |

Just wait till they up the tax system to pay for the loss in tourism.

But Vegas, as in the Casinos/strip, I don't think is dying. They may be in a crunch right now, many less people visiting Vegas, just to 'play Vegas.' But plenty of dirty old men with a shit load of money still visit every day. |
Just got back this morning and things seemed to be pretty busy, and I saw prices on the strip for things like food and drink much cheaper than past years.
|
The last time i went to the strip, the number of those dudes with the 'escort cards' hanging about seemed to fucking multiply by 10.
Fucking pains in the ass! |
Went there last weekend and it seemed pretty packed to me. Why do you associate them trying to make more money with it going into the gutter?
|
with the economy the way it is I prefer to spend my money locally. I donate to the single moms and college students at the local strip club

I miss the old days ... gambling, hookers, strippers and blow.

its not that its going to shit, but people go to Vegas now for a different reason then they did 20 years ago.
years back everyone went there to do one thing, and that was gamble. they would give you a free buffet because they know you would spend some change before going in to eat. same with drinks and bars. now, people go to vegas to party and drink and see shows. Ive been to Vegas a number of times and I dont think I have ever gambled as much in all those trips as I do in one trip to AC. the problem is the casino is loosing money by bringing people in. every person that walks through that door has a cost. they have to have security, cleaning crew, air conditioning, etc., so for them to make money, they have to charge you. |

Vegas has made a pretty big effort to switch from being a gamblers paradise to being a vacationers paradise. I don't gamble much, but last time I went there I was there for three days and just had fun walking around checking things out. I probably spent about $200 on gambling so I can see where they want to be able to make more money off of people like me who don't blow their cash at the tables.

Oscar Goodman has been crying about Obama's speeches hurting Vegas, but he doesn't seem to want to blame the casinos for jacking up prices and nickle and diming everyone to death.
It also doesn't help that a couple big companies own pretty much all of the casinos. They use this "slow economy" bullshit to pay their employees less and work them harder with the threat of losing their jobs. Las Vegas had the chance to bring in high tech companies many years ago and bring in income that was more than just tourism and gambling. They fucked it up and kept building these large lavish hotels, with the prices continuing to climb. Every hotel had to have "high end " shops and expensive restaurants, even the dumpy casinos that would have been better off being imploded and rebuilt from scratch. The city could only handle so many of these without something giving, now we're seeing a thinning of the herd. TheDoc is right, a bunch of LA douchebags came in, brought in their shitty overinflated real estate speculation, stupid laws and fucked it up. Builders started building house closer together to squeeze in 2-3 more houses per lot and flooded the market. Out of town construction employees came in to grab the booming construction job market, then just up and left, leaving the local guys. Vegas is definitely one big mess, but it's also an opportunity. I'm looking at houses that were selling for a retarded $500-600K now being listed in the lower 300s and in some cases even lower than that. Good. A lot of them were just out of town speculators anyways. casino employees couldn't really afford them anyways. Vegas isn't dead, it's just undergoing a marketing correction... |
i just came back from vegas on sunday and it was packed and with the economy room rates are the best i have ever seen!!!!!

I haven't had a problem on any trip to Vegas. There are cheaper places to eat if you don't want to spend money in a nicer place. Free drinks while I watch sports all day long at the Bellagio. That works for me.
|
Yep
Last time I was in Vegas we got a suite comped for 9 days in Planet Hollywood... still aint worked out how... we were most definetly not part of the Bro Club or High Rollers lol :)
|
I had a nice lunched comped to me today at Lagasse's Stadium at the Palazzo. Not sure why they were replaying the US/Canada hockey game though....

vegas can still be fun. Heck i'm going there with 2 nights and 2 rooms comped this weekend. ALWAYS if you are going to play for some time put down a players card. The last thing you want is for you to go on a monster run and not have it go noticed on your card and the workers there and not get those comps. Then check online to see offers. I see free rooms or two for one offers all the time that they aren't calling you about.
Heck, call the vip hosts and ask for deals. I did for the deal i'm getting this coming weekend. Told them hey I'm bringing another room full of people that will be gambling with me. I will admit i used to love going to the clubs years ago. now i just hate that they pack them in WAY too much. I generally now will go (if i go) to the ones a lot later into the night. Wait until the guys and girls that can't really drink or are tired leave around 1-3am. (depends on the night) Then when i go in there is a bit more room to operate. vegas has changed for sure. However there is still a lot of fun to be had. |

I'm headed there next week for three days --- all comped and the flight from SD is $59 each way on Southwest. And I get comps every month (I don't use them every month, but they're there for me every month)...I also get monthly comp offers (that I hardly ever use) at the SD casinos, and at other casinos that I visit around the country from time to time. And I'm *not* a huge baller, either. I'm just regular - they can count on me - and in this economy, they're happy to have me :winkwink: |
why is dead?

Also, Vegas isn't just the strip.....there are suburbs and people who don't even venture to the casinos. Everything thinks Vegas is a bunch of casinos and a couple golf courses...but get out to where "the people live" and you'll see the for sale signs littering up the landscape....some of which have been there almost 2-3 years now... |
