Youtube requiring cell phone to create account now

Does anyone know if this is only "sometimes" or is this for any account that someone tries to make. So far I made two accounts and both needed phone verification. I guess I'll change my IP soon and try again. Wow that would suck!

I don't believe it's 100% yet.

But it could be coming, who knows. There's already quite the market growing for Youtube PVAs.

you can use any google account for youtube

google doesnt require a cell phone number

you can work the rest out.........

Some IP ranges are PVA only as far as I can tell. Some people are forced into PVA, some are not. i don't know for sure, but I'm assuming it is based on specific IP ranges. probably just testing the waters for PVAs in certain regions. Same way CL slowly worked PVA only accounts into certain areas of their directory. I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes widespread for YT to require PVAs from more and more regions. Facebook has been doing the same thing. I suppose it slows some spam down, but in general all it will do is create a big underground market for verified accounts.

You'd think Google would have learned that lesson for CL. You can't stop the spam machine once it gets rolling. At least not with a puny attempt like phone verification.

if they will require it, it will be quite the list of cell #'s they will have for data mining

hypedough 02-26-2010 01:58 AM

Smart idea for both data mining purposes as well as keeping multiple accounts to a minimum.

about time.

Could be a good thing. Craigslist is the same way to help with the spam.

It didn't happen this time under a new IP. Their FAQ says "you may see this verification from time to time" so I believe its not a regular thing yet.

Google did it to me about a month ago too but not on another account I created since. The gmail account that wanted to text me was made as a direct sign up but the one that didn't ask for a phone number was off an invitation link. Not sure how it will solve any problems as my phone is pay-as-you-go and never had to be registered to anybody although I suppose they could limit the number of accounts a single phone number could verify.

phone verification is a solid way given they use the cnam database and most do, you cant stop everything 100% but it helps allot.

google now requires me to enter cell phone to make account

Tom_PM 02-26-2010 09:55 AM

I dont own a cell phone and have no plans to at this time. It's not a requirement in life.

Nautilus 02-26-2010 11:12 AM

Good thing is that copyright holders can now request cell phone numbers too of the uploaders of their copyrighted material, not just IP addresses.

Might stop some fucks loving to share what's not their.

ColetteX 02-26-2010 11:16 AM

its not required between 2am to 3:30am

Tom_PM 02-26-2010 11:31 AM

Ah, so it's just any phone number? Thats not a problem. Most people with internet access have either landline or cell. Google has called me before anyway, I dont see how getting a second number could do a darn thing.

mrblogperson 02-26-2010 11:39 AM

Happened to me too!
