HUGE difference between a 5 and an 8. Even a 6.0 quake is 32X more powerful than a 5.0, so a 8.0 quake is 33,000 times more powerful than a 5.0. And this 8.8 is 518,000 times more powerful than a 5.0 quake. 7.0-7.9 quakes happen about once every 3 weeks. 8.0 and greater about once a year
