shipping external hard drives with porn on them across state lines...
 

What do I need to know? I've got a full 1TB hard drive I need to send to my financier in Hawaii from AZ ... can I just fedex it and be okay or do I need to make an attempt at concealing what it is. Obviously I'm not going to make it obvious that there is porn on it but is this illegal?

It's a mix of b/g hardcore and solo scenes but is about 90% solo stuff, copy of all docs is on the drive as well.

I know it's done I just don't know any of the laws surrounding it.

Problem is his internet connection blows and it would probably take him a year to download everything. I would DEFINITELY not ship it USPS. Thanks for the input on the fedex/ups route.

They do have Customs randomly checking packages at UPS/FedEx facilities but I think you'll be fine. I highly doubt they'd open the box and stick it into a computer.

I don't think U. S. Customs looks at stuff going state to state:disgust

Don't use the US Postal System and you will be fine.

I've used USPS to ship content all over the world many times, including across state borders to many states and I've never had a single issue.

I've also used FedEx and UPS and I've never had an issue there either. It's just more expensive.

If you really want to be safe (and you're insanely paranoid), just use PGP and encrypt the entire drive.

I am super paranoid but not to that extent.

Thanks for all the feedback guys, looks like I'll be using either UPS or FedEx and packing the fuck out of it because it seems everything gets fucked up using those shipping companies.

Your wrong! I know for a fact there are Customs people checking packages at random at the FedEx and UPS hub. They are looking for drugs, money, etc. I'm 100% postive.

It's not illegal but given the history of overzealous postal inspectors and the way the government uses the postal laws to prosecute people, it's best not to send anything remotely controversial through the mail. Better safe than sorry.

I would never send anything to Hawaii. Hand deliver it then hit the beach.

i have sent tapes and drives many times by either USPS or UPS from Germany and CZ to the US - never an issue. just that USPS sometimes takes extremely long, last time about 6 weeks. they probably jerked off to the content and copied everything at customs before they forwarded it.

Want to save yourself any headache and hassle? Go out, spend the $100 on a brand new unit, dump all the porn on it, then ship it to him in the OEM box and in the comments and value section list it as a gift. Even if they did pop the thing open in a random check, the likelihood of them actually firing up the drive to see if anything is on it are slim to none.

fyi, the postal inspector has the legal right to search any *mail* delivered by any shipper, that includes fedex and ups.

there is nothing illegal with shipping legal porn via usps to someone who requests it.

it is illegal to ship unsolicited adult material via usps without including wording on the outside of the package that it is adult material.

and everytime i fly over to the US i can read on the immigration papers that i am not allowed to bring explicit material. i am sure that sending it in a parcel instead does not make it better.

there are a few dangerous zip codes that some consider risky to ship to, but that relates to the local law within those zip codes and not due to any usps law.

laugh all you want but hustler, penthouse, and many other rags are mailed via USPS so be sure and LOL @ them too eh.
