TiVo Posts $10.2 Million Loss, We Contemplate Dusting Off Our Funeral Garb

From gizmodo.com

"We've remarked in the past that TiVo is slowly dying and the latest numbers from the company aren't making us any more optimistic:

http://gizmodo.com/5412735/tivo-is-slowly-dying

For the quarter ended Jan. 31, TiVo posted a loss of $10.2 million, or 9 cents a share, compared with a year-earlier loss of $3.6 million, or 4 cents a share.

Youch. Doesn't help that the company is struggling more and more to even find any new subscribers.

it's not all bad news for them though

TiVo prevails in patent rights case against Dish

a-hah! i guess that's why they're outsourcing their banners to 99designs.

I really like their product but yeah it seems like more people are just using the cable company's provided boxes. I'm surprised that TiVo hasn't released a box that can use the cable's companies on-demand features. It's a major difference between TiVo and the cable boxes and the government has already forced the cable companies to make the protocols public.

I thought they died years ago.

Who the fuck is going to have that extra box sitting around doing exactly what your cable box can do? Tivo is a little better with the interface and features, but you can't beat having the cable and DVR wrapped up in one box.

I just threw away a Tivo box that I found at the bottom of a closet.

Yup. When they were the only one, they were killing it. Once the cable companies got into DVR, it was game over, because why would someone want 2 boxes when they could just have 1?

I thought the fat lady was clearing her throat last year on Tivo.

It is not really game over for them once the cable companies got into the DVR business as they all license the technology from TiVo.

TiVo is a billion times better than the cable company DVR. I surely hope TiVo stays in business because I never watched TV before I had a TiVo and I think I'd miss it if I stopped watching.

Plus, don't they make you look at ads when fast-forwarding? Damed if I'll do that. If my cable company tries to make me, I'll build a PC-based DVR solution. It's bad enough that the NAB has forced the cable companies to make you fast-forward instead of skip ahead. I used to have Dish DVR that let me press a button and skip ahead 30 seconeds. Push that a few times and no commercials at all. But no, that couldn't stand. So the NAB pressured all the DVR makers to remove that feature. They know that if we have to fast-forward through the ads, we'll still see them pretty well. And sadly, they are right.

A $10.2 Million loss is rather queer. Bad news for TiVo.

thats what happens when your product is a headache to use, people try other options

Well obviously not looking too good for them if they're still losing money despite that intake.

I thought they were going to get a deal with comcast. christ, i hope they dont go under, i just replaced two DVRs with the TiVo HD and spent $200 on external drives to increase the storage.

The platform is amazing and blows everything else out of the water. They have the best system to manage and record shows I have seen and every other DVR comes second to theirs

It's alot cheaper to use the cable companies dvr and it works just as good.

So long as it Records X # of episodes, i'm good. However if Tivo let me record 4 shows at once that might be worth something, sadly it only does 2.

Brujah 03-09-2010 01:11 AM

I prefer TIVO to the cable company DVR, by far.

I have the cable card so I only need the TiVo box.

Why is that?

james_clickmemedia 03-10-2010 04:20 PM

We moved away from tivo to the HD DVR from dish network and have never looked back.

The interface is nicer. It's more intuitive. Easier to use and find things. It's smarter about handling shows that don't sync up exactly on the hour or half hour. I have a lifetime subscription for it. The cable company DVR is an extra $10/mo.
