Schumi! Can't wait till saturday (qualifying) / sunday (race) . His comeback is the main reason for me to watch F1 agian. Excited if he can still be one of the fastest drivers after such a long break?

i dont think schumi will be fastest, i know he has still been racing and F1 test driver and things during his break so its not like he is starting all over. i would like him to do well tho, specially if he can beat Hamilton!!

Oh yeah were on this sunday.. Think Hamilton is gonna take the title this year. Im afraid Schumacher isn't gonna be fast enough to cut it.

I was just driving around the track in Melbourne today - they are setting up all the barriers for the first race......

I was a little bit surprised when I heard that they not refueling anymore during the races. (changed rules) Never heard why, to make the F1 look more ecological? (No waste of gas anymore :1orglaugh)

as far as i'm aware they have stopped refueling to make the race faster and more exciting as they are trying to increase their viewing figures :2 cents:

Fuck Jenson, Lewis Hamilton is going to show that wannabe just who the real Champ is. Lewis Hamilton will have the Championship won by Race 16. He is on a mission this season.

The first race is in Bahrain on Sunday. Melbourne is the second race this year.

what a crazy cluster fuck of pre-season drama this has been, the new teams, mclaren's controversial rear wing, the ban on refueling, ferrari whining about it all.

i am anxious to see how it all plays out. red bull looks like the team to beat in 2010

refuelling was banned to make it more entertaining and to stop people overtaking via stratergy

I'm a big fan of motor sports and love to photograph them.

NASCAR sits at the top of my list. I'd go to a F1 race if they came to the US but they don't.

So, why the hell doesn't the world's biggest auto racing series compete in the US?

it's my understanding there's not enough interest here to support an f1 event.

They used to hold them in the US, the last one was 2007 I think.

The guy that owns the rights has 'vowed never to return' to Indianapolis where the last one was held.

there used to be the race in Indianapolis for a while. but due to the lack of interest from visitors they cancelled it. it seems like americans prefer watching cars going round in a circle for hours.

thats like football (handegg) and soccer (football) - why is the most popular sport worldwide mostly ignored in the US?

I remember when they came to Indy and there was some sort of controversy that ruined it.

I talked to another photographer while at the Rolex 24 and his thing was F1 and he got me interested in it. He said the best chance for me to see a race was probably going to be Montreal if they still race there. That's out of my reach for now.

It's too bad F1 can't get a foothold in such a huge market like the US. I can't imagine the cost involved for the teams and the series to come over to race in the US. It would be such a huge hill to climb for them and it seems like they don't have the leadership to do it even if they wanted to. When it comes to brilliant marketing you have to give the nod to NASCAR.

The controversy was a tyre safety issue and a lot of the drivers/teams refused to race. That was 2005 and it may have had an effect on the crowds for the following 2 races.

There's been dozens of F1 races over the years in the US so I don't know what's changed really.

There's been talk of trying to hold F1 road races, like they do in Monaco and Singapore, in the likes of New York or Las Vegas, but nothing concrete on this yet.

I don't see how cost for the teams is such an issue? I don't see what you are getting at. These guys fly all over the world, there's races in both North and South America this year.

The recession and huge demand from other parts of the world with huge sums of cash. :2 cents:

The cost thought comes from my NASCAR experience and the main reason they don't go international is the time and cost of transporting all their equipment overseas to a race venue. They have done it a few times for exhibition and they do a points race in mexico and montreal but those can be driven to. One NASCAR team brings a giant hauler with at least two race cars, spare engines and all their equipment to every race. They can hardly afford to race now with out adding the astronomical cost of shipping all that overseas to some international race venue. I'm thinking the same would be for F1 to come here.

I don't know the F1 schedule and venues and whether they have to travel overseas to race. I'm guessing they spend most of their time in Europe and Asia where you can drive through four or five countries in a day.

A lot of the races are in Europe and Asia but there's still a lot of flying about even between some that you could theoretically drive to.

When Canada and US have both been on the calendar in the previous 3-4 years at least, they have been on consecutive weekends as far as I can remember.

Well I agree with the demand from other countries. Not sure how much recession played a part of it back then but I suppose it's possible.

Formula 1 returns to Montreal this year after being off last season. I have never been to the race there but have been in town when it is happening...and it is a happening!

Maybe that has played a part in why the US hasn't embraced F1.

It seems like something where the guy with the most money wins and you need a zillion dollars just to race. Again, I know nothing about F1 so I'm wondering is it manufacturer against manufacturer or can anyone with enough money start a team.

One NASCAR team cost 20 to 30 million to race over a season and anyone with the money can do it with whatever manufacturer they choose. The fact that the fans can cheer for their favorite manufacturer and or team and or driver gives that extra appeal and more relatable than they could with an F1 team which seems to be " spoiled " for lack of a better term.

Wasn't someone here going to start a F1 team called USF1 or something. What happened to that and why is it so difficult for someone to start a team. That must play a part in the lack of US interest.

I'm not bashing F1 I'd really like the chance to see a race in person. I'm just trying to figure out why it's bombed in the US and interested in your thoughts.

I've tried watching F1 on TV, but I just can't get into it.

I'm excited the season is starting. I like Kubica, but think I will root for Vettel this year.

this year several rookie teams have tried to make the 13 team cut but finances and the big 3-4 teams bitch A LOT about various issues with the junior teams trying to enter, consequently, a couple did not make the cut. that's my take on it anyway, some others here can chime in and add to this or correct me.

You should at least change that first sentence to '...isn't currently embracing F1'.

Since 2000, the US has hosted a F1 grand prix 7 times and has hosted them on and off since the start of the last century :)

Last year the constructors championship was won by a newcomer Brawn GP. Granted, they bought a team that was going out of business and the guy that bought it was very experienced but I don't think there budget was particularly high.

Anyone can setup a team if you have the money and the tech savvy. Some teams buy their engines etc from the likes of Mercedes and BMW.

USF1 ran into finanacial difficulties. They had asked if they could miss out the first few races of this season to try and find additional sponsors but they are no longer included in this season at all.

There's only 12 teams. There's 3 new teams though after Toyota pulled out. Not sure of the selection process.

eh? i thought there was a max of 26 cars, i.e. 13 teams? or was that for just the bahrain event?

The USF1 team pulled out last week. It was too late to enter a replacement team.
