Just picked these up...

I've been looking at an on-screen solution for drawing, and as much as I like Wacom tablets, they just aren't as portable as I wanted. So I did some digging around and found this HP TM2 Tablet PC, which is MultiTouch and Wacom Penabled. Cost was about half of the Cintiq 21UX. Had a little bit of an issue with the Multitouch drivers conflicting with the pen drivers, so I disabled the touch portion of it and it works fine. This tablet operates in portrait or landscape, however, you have to push a button to switch the orientation. Not a big deal. I have a couple other Wacom tablets, (Bamboo and Intuos) but never really got the hang of the hand-eye coordination that these tablets require, and it just didn't seem natural.

After a few practice drawing sessions, I found that in Illustrator and Photoshop, without an actual keyboard, some aspects of the drawing process were a little bit clunky and it became apparent that I needed some macros or hotkeys to program for repetitive functions. I did some searching and found the Logitech G13. It works like a charm. No need for a real keyboard (the on-screen keyboard works just fine for most text input), and the multiple profiles and 25 programmable keys will definitely come in handy.

Anyhow, I just thought I'd share in case you are an artist looking for a similar solution.

This is just a test, as I'm getting used to it and all. Just a work in progress, not finished by any means.

That looks really good! I have to check into this. What did you find clunky about the wacom? for instance when you are drawing something does it just disconnected, and this tablet feels alot more natural?

munki 03-15-2010 04:08 PM

Touchsmart FTW

Wacom isn't clunky, the Cintiq 12 & 21 are nice, I just couldn't justify the price for what you get, also just didn't like that you needed to connect them to a computer in order to use them. Was looking for a portable solution with on-screen drawing capabilities, and pound for pound, the Tablet w/ Multitouch seemed like the best solution.

Yeah, you had mentioned the touch screen PC a while ago, and that's what got me looking into this. The tablets are difficult to find at a retail location, but after some scouting around, I found that Fry's carries a couple models, and that one of them happened to have the pen digitizer.

Also, the screen on the HP TM2 takes a little getting used to, it does have a gloss / reflection, so I ordered some screen protectors to help give it more of a matte finish. That should do the trick.

That's where I picked up Beth's portable Touch, I believe it's the model just before yours, also with the pen doohickey. Got my fullsize touch there as well, though I do wish I had popped a few extra bucks into the pen there, but still an awesome little tool.
