Road trip, with dog. Done it?

Next month we are taking a cross-country road trip, and I am going to bring Buddy with me. My question has to do with lodging.

Have you traveled with your dog and had to stay at hotels/motels? What was your experience as far as finding "pet friendly" places to stay?

I've done it with 2 chihuahuas, we called all potential places we wanted to stop at ahead of time to make sure they accepted pets. The biggest problems we faced was to find a quiet place for the dogs to do their needs. Also, many hotels charge an extra $250+ deposit when you rent a room, so if you're staying 7 nights, you end up with a couple of $k on hold on your credit card. Beside that it was pretty easy, but the 2 dogs barely weigh 20lbs total...

I would not do it unless you were thinking about renting a house wherever it is you're planning to go.

Most Residence Inns allow pets. I would love to toss my dogs in the car and go but I just don't think I would do that long of a road trip with them.

laquinta no pet charge. We traveled from atl to la with moo a 45 lbs mutt cross country. She was great and laquinta's love pets.

hey my doggy's name is Buddy also.

I took him everywhere when I was homeless for a month moving to BC and living in hotels and sponging off my relatives :)

It was all fine and dandy til one day we locked our Buddy in in the bathroom went looking at houses, he shit all over the place rolled in it and then did a nice runaround tour of the room cause he was so happy to be let out.

Did I say that out loud? Im going to be jailed by the SPCA now.

Not staying anywhere long enough to justify renting a house.

Was told The W is the same way, although I am pretty sure there will be no W's anywhere we are going.

No. We will drive back to LA and pick him up before we begin our journey. I expect to be too busy to tend to a dog at the show and he is not the type of dog I would want to keep cooped up in a hotel room.

I did think about it, up until we decided to become sponsors.

However, you might meet him in Portland. Still deciding our route.

Don't forget a couple of big beach towels. Somewhere sometime he will get soaked. Always use one for him to sleep on we both know what goes onto hotel rugs :1orglaugh

You can look hotels up on www.dogfriendly.com. I travelled a whole summer with my dog a few years back. We had a blast.

i went from florida to ny with my dog. only stopped overnight once, just make sure you book hotels that accept pets in advance and you will be fine.

Yeah, I am already planning on a special blanket that will be used on the back seat and act as his bed when we stop for the evening. A couple towels for rivers and lakes will be along as well.

I am not sure if OR will be on the way to IN or the way back. Either way, I will be sure to stop by.

When we travel we don't really set destinations. Will have to play it by ear. I think DateDoc's link will help a lot.
