My new pet Otter! [PICs!]

Check him out! just found this cute little fella this morning having a swim in my pond.

http://i43.tinypic.com/8xu4uv.jpg

Looks like a river otter to me but not sure. Interesting to have in there though. He's been sticking his head out of the water most of the day.

Here he is having a bit of a sun bathe (not so good pic, to much sun glare on the ice):

Otters are awesome and dangerous from what I hear.

CaptainHowdy 03-25-2010 10:19 AM

Tam 03-25-2010 10:20 AM

Yeah they are! And he didn't seem to like me taking his photo, he was yelling at me (well more like a hissing noise lol)

Not sure about them being dangerous but I don't think I'd like to find out. He's probably in there eating all the little fish :1orglaugh

TLE 03-25-2010 10:23 AM

Love it - nice backyard - pond and otter!

Yeah we had foxes last year, they ate our fucking ducks! :( No snakes here really only small little one's. And we get skunks in the fall and they really piss me off!

Oh and dear i'll have to get some of my other pictures up. Get all kinds of other wildlife round here :)

I'm just hoping this little guy stays in there for a while. Might have to go buy him some fish, the little sprats in there wont last him very long :1orglaugh

Tom_PM 03-25-2010 10:31 AM

If it eats all the fish, wont your pond become full of uncontrolled algae?

Cool pics. Looks cold!

Maybe, it's fresh water fed so it shouldn't do. I might get a pump or fountain put in there this year anyway. It's a pretty boring pond at the moment really, big but boring lol. Would be nice to put an island on it aswell.

MaDalton 03-25-2010 10:41 AM

I love Otter! soooo cute. but they make no good pets

Yeah they are! well I can't really call him a pet, he just turned up lol. Hope he stays in there though. He seems comfortable in there, just didn't like me going near him.

I just hope he ain't a sea otter otherwise fuck knows what I will do. Might have to have him trapped and get him returned to the sea or something.

Scott McD 03-25-2010 10:53 AM

That would be awesome to see that little fella.

Where do you live btw?

They are so bad here, (Coyotes) that one of our neighbors woke up one morning to a ruckus on their back porch and seen a Coyote standing there ripping his cat to pieces and a few neighbors have had their dogs and other animals eaten by them. We all have to have our animals in a pen if we keep them outside or they will be dinner sooner or later.

Snakes are fucking HUGE here... Copperheads are the worst out here where I am. I see snake and my feet take off before my body even knows it's moving. I am horrified of them and I don't stop to see if it is a bad one or not, I just run.... and I don't stop until I have literally nowhere else to run to. lmao

We have what they call Hognose snakes here, only ever seen one. I came home and stepped on one of them and their heads swell up almost like a Cobra and I just froze there with my foot on the back of his head screaming, afraid if I moved he was going to bite me and kill me.... I must have stood there for 20 minutes screaming for someone to come and help me. My brother finally came and cut his head off with a shovel, damn near taking my foot with it because I couldn't move. lmao

Here is an article about those bad boys.... I have never been so terrified in my life. Of course I was only like 15 at the time too. lol

OneSix 03-25-2010 11:06 AM

These days I have to consciously remind myself that the whole world does not, in fact, live in Brooklyn.

Gorgeous pics, Si...and that skyline is amazing. :bowdown

BradM 03-25-2010 11:07 AM

Please call the SPCA and ask if he is safe there or if he will have food etc... if he can't make it back to his stream and food source he might die. :[

bloggerz 03-25-2010 11:11 AM

:Oh crap:Oh crap

I think we had a cayote once in the 2 years we've been here. I was in bed and it was about 3am and I heard this screaming it sounded like a woman crying for help, I got out of bed and looked out the window and there was this big dog sized animal standing in the road shouting it's head off. I couldn't really see it but it was way! to big to be a fox.

Only time thats happened though, haven't seen it since.

And yeah fuck snakes! some of them are pretty and what not but I would shit a brick if I see something like that in the wild lol. I like looking at them in cages and what not but out in the open would scare the crap outa me.

Here's a moose we had last year, he was fucking massive!!!!!!!! (my neighbour took that pic though, my camera was dead :( )

I was thinking that actually, especially if he is a sea otter. There is definately food in there because we had 1000s of little fish last year. But good idea :thumbsup

I called them up, got put through to another place, GNR or something. The guy reckons he probably came to my pond for food and if he seems happy enough to leave him and see what happens. :thumbsup

Fatbat 03-25-2010 11:33 AM

I'm quite certain that's a river otter. They look quite a bit different from sea otters. Sea otters also don't really leave the sea or the immediate shoreline.

Yeah it definately looks like a river otter. The only problem is it could have been a sea otter where I am, there is a tidal river about 100feet away from the pond. Not sure but the sea water might even come into the bit thats feeds my pond.

I doubt it though. Probably just a river otter. He's cool anyway. Just got to keep an eye on him. Not sure how long the fish in there will last him lol.

GNR or whoever it was, said if he seems comfortable in there leave him be, and if I see him looking stressed to call them and they will come catch him and take him somewhere better. :thumbsup

OneSix 03-25-2010 11:46 AM

Any ideas for a name yet?

I vote Otto, but I'm a big fan of clichés. :bigears

Nope no idea for a name lol. I'm just wondering how long he's going to stay in there. Might actually end up being a little pet of sorts if he gets settles in :)

Otto sounds good though. Or maybe Chris because he likes to hiss. And he was doing that at me when I was taking the pictures lol.

Oh wow, he's cool looking. :thumbsup

Oh we have deer, when we first moved in here 3 of them just came walking up in our yard while we were outside with the dog and they just stood there looking at us for a long time and then moved on. I'll see if I can find that, they were pretty bold. lol

We have an empty field beside our house that used to be a popcorn field for the longest time and we hear the coyotes out there all the time, on opposite ends of the field screaming like crazy. What they do here is catch a stray that gets in the field and they run them literally to death and then eat them.... or damn near to death.

Snakes, I can't even go and stand in front of them in pet stores, it makes my hair stand up on my neck and god forbid they ever open one of them up and I am in there. I literally ran out of one pet store screaming when they pointed to a stuffed one on top of the display, it looked so real that for a split second, I was convinced it was real and I bolted. If I see them on TV even, my feet automatically come off the floor. lol

v4 media 03-25-2010 11:54 AM

They'll happily bite off your finger given the chance.. cute fuckers though.

when my ferret's in the bath on his back he looks like an otter.

Done and done, as mentioned above I've got to keep an eye on him. If he gets stressed or looks uncomfortable then I've got to call them up again and they will try and move him along to somewhere better.

There is plenty of fish in there for him, the guy I spoke even said he probably ended up in there because he found food. And he should be fine. :thumbsup

Yeah I might have to, there should be enough in there for him for a while though. there was 1000s of fish in there last year. lots of river chub (i think thats what they were anyway) they are about 3-7 inches big. He should be fine in there.

I haven't seen on of them in the yard yet but we get them round here apparently. Raccoons are the other thing we see alot they are pretty cute, as long as they don't cause any problems.

Different animal creatures. This is interesting. Does the human being have the best brain out of all the animal creatures? This is interesting. Some argue that dolphins are smart.

Surely, the human being does not have the best eye. Did you know that the retina of a bald eagle is far superior to that of a human? Yes, the eagle can see more than 10 times better than a human, and it can spot a mouse from many 100s of meters away.

Here in Florida we have freshwater Otters as well. There's are several small ponds near me like the one you pictured and I like to walk my dog by them. Once in a rare while we'll see an Otter. They are very curious and will follow us along from the water. They also don't stay long. I'll see one at one spot for a day or two and then they're gone and won't see another one for months. I've even had one follow on my dog walk, got home to get a camera and go back to nothing :upsidedow

Be very careful though as they can and will bite. Not at all something you would try and hand feed like a squirrel. Just watch from a distance

They seem so happy go lucky. :)

Cool :)

I suspect he'll probably gone tomorrow. He's been there all day in pretty much the same spot enjoying himself. going under for fish and what not.

If there is as many fish in there as I think, then he could be there for quite a while! lol. That would be good. But I doubt it.

Nice to have something like that visit though :)
