U.S. Navy's Railgun back on track

Obama decided not to nix the program. This railgun shoots out projectiles at mach 7.5, which is hyper velocity, from a ship 200 miles away, the missile reaches it's target in 6 minutes, which is pretty amazing. There are rumors that the Navy has already installed 3 railguns to it's persian, atlantic and pacific fleet. It will be a smaller version apparently, but fuck, that thing will be able to do alot of damage.

Looks like the future is here. You can see an article on it here

when will it support human travel?

video game scifi here:

last game i played was 10+ yrs ago... metal gear solid for playstation1, like eons ago in my college days. the whole game was based upon stopping this robot with a railgun that could fire nukes without rocket propulsion, making them hard(er) if not impossible to intercept. so if this is indeed reality wow

watched a special on the Military Network quite a while ago about rail gun technology. Might have just been an episode of Future Weapons now that i think of it. Anyhow, some pretty crazy fucking shit.

Had to look up what it was all about. Found this.

Why on earth would we not want this?

I love hearing about new ways we can kill one another.

Is it too early to nominate Obama for the next Nobel Peace Prize?

I think it is too early.

Obama already won the Nobel Peace prize in December 2009.

this makes no sense. a rail gun is a precision rifle that allows you to blast people out of the air in quake 3, as you, too, fly through the air at high speeds. What is all this navy railgun garbage? If it cant be fired from the hip and shoot crystal shards at warp 67, then im not interested.

Vendzilla 04-04-2010 08:40 PM

The theory behind the rail gun has been around for a long time, in high school, I built a small one that left a dent in the ceiling. They just could never at the time figure out how to get the velocity they wanted. I'm glad they have working models now. Better equipment gives our troops an edge.
Not to kill but as a deterant. Thinking of what on Ohio class submarine can do would keep you up at night. Theres a boat that can make a country disappear in a puff of smoke.

sorry for the political comment - but i really wish the pentagon would build weapons to fight the enemies we are fighting, instead of the illusions dreamed up by cold warrior bureaucrats. We already spend hundreds of billions on nukes, planes, subs, & missile defenses that do nothing but sit around. add the railgun to the pile of useless toys.

I agree we need to change the BIG GUN thinking to some degree, but if you were to follow what the capabilities of the new ships coming out can do, you would see that's exactly whats happening.
For instance , the newer submarines are designed for bringing seal teams to the beach, before they could let out in the water a couple at a time, now they all go at once. They even have a mini sub on them. Cruise missiles are part of all submarines now. The USS Bush is the last of the big aircraft carriers, they are going to build smaller ones now.
The rail gun is for pin point accuracy taking out a city from the sea, before troops get involved, saving our troops. You don't just send in troops and hope for the best
