(CANVAS STAFF REPORTS) - Need a little more fear in your life? A California company has just what you need: an underground bunker.
That's right. No longer the product of the military and doomsday cults, this model includes "food, fuel, water, clothing, medical supplies and security devices in a multi-level, 20,000-square-foot hardened shelter," reports NPR .
A privately funded company called Vivos (Spanish for "The Living") can build a bunker for $10 million; each shelter can house up to 200 people. The company plans to build 20 bunkers, according to the Vivos Web site.
The shelters would be high-tech. The company says each includes an "internal power generation system, backup battery banks, deep water wells, biological, chemical and radiation air filtration systems, sewage disposal systems, abundant food and clothing storage, security devices, medical equipment and supplies and critical support equipment including off-road vehicles," NPR reports.
As for daily life inside one of these bunkers, Vivos says, "Once a facility is occupied and under lock down, the co-owners will elect a council and take over autonomous operation and management of their Vivos facility," according to NPR.
The Vivos Web site also includes a countdown clock to Dec. 21, 2012 , a date known as "the end of the Mayan long count calendar," NPR reports .
In case you needed more motivation, the company Web site also states: "You and your loved ones are invited to survive the next Earth devastating catastrophe, terrorist or nuclear attack. Vivos is the life-assurance-solution for your family, to survive for up to one year in an autonomous, hardened and nuclear blast blast proof, underground shelter. ? Where else would you go with just a few days' notice?"
