Anyone sell a car private party?
I'm selling my 2009 Audi A4 and posted it around online and got a few people interested. One guy said he wants to come take a look this weekend and buy it.
But, with all these scams I want to product myself and Ive never sold a car private party before. Any suggestions on what to do? I know personal checks and money orders are a no-no, but what about a bank wire or escrow service? |

Just make sure to not sign the title over until you have money in your hand. Depending on the amount you could probably insist on some kind of bank transfer or just tell them you want to go with them to the bank to get the money so you know it is on the up and up. |
Go with them to their bank to get cash, or to your bank to receive a wire transfer.
Car and title stay with you till you have good funds in hand. |
Just get cash, even 10-20k should not be a problem.
Why would it be? |
Why you selling the A4? I have a 2007 A4 I bought with 4 miles on it and sold it with 12k because it was a lemon. I sure miss the car though despite its many issues

Cash talks. I've sold several cars as a private party, and always provide a bill of sale that both of us get a copy of (both signed originals). All sales have been cash, and the single check was from a local, actually trusted source at the time.

cash or cashiers check
Go with them to the title place and make sure everything goes smooth. You don't want someone driving a car that is still legally titled to you because of some glitch in the transfer. Last private sale I did when we got to the title place there was a problem with the buyers insurance that took a day to straighten out. |
Just sold my car for CASH! also do a bill of sale.

Whats the problem with a check? They just have to wait for it to clear.... :)

About 8 in the past year.. Cash only. Go with them to the bank if you have to.

Do the deal inside your bank, the buyer pays you cash and you deposit the cash in your account. Money orders and Cashiers checks can be counterfeit. A honest buyer should have no problem doing a deal inside the bank.
