central air.. vent not working???

i just got a new place.. it has central air that controls the bedrooms.. the air only seems to work in one room.. the other room has no heat/cool coming out of the vents..

how can a vent not be working, but the system is actually working... anyone ever had a problem like this?? basically some of your vents had air coming out, the others didnt..

Waddymelon 04-22-2010 10:42 PM

There is a dead cat in the vent, blocking the air flow.

Alky 04-22-2010 10:46 PM

I hate to state the obvious... but is the vent open? lol

xxweekxx 04-22-2010 10:49 PM

ya its vents mounted on top near the ceiling.. they dont open/close.. its just open vents..

Yeah, I was just going to say...if it is open and still not working do you have 2 central air units? ( one for upstairs and down?)

I you have 2 units, one could be blown.

xxweekxx 04-22-2010 11:16 PM

i have 2 units..

1 unit controls living room.
1 unit controls 2 bedrooms..

when i turn them both on, they both come on

air comes from living room vents
air comes from one bedroom vents

the other bedroom has no air from the vents, which is why its fucking with me.. how can air be coming out of a vent, and not another, even though the system is runnnig

My first thought is that something maybe be clogging the ductwork. Second would be that somehow maybe the ductwork to that vent has come apart.

those are probably the return vents, the vents that the air comes out of should be near the floor. That's how my house is setup anyways.

Yeah the air vents in mobile homes are in the floor. But in houses, they are in the ceiling. He is talking about a house.

i've never seen a home that had the vents in the ceiling, besides in the basement...

with my furnace set up, you can close vents near the start of the piping towards that room but i would imagine you don't have access to check this?

A lot of that depends on area as well. Its not only mobile homes that the vents are in the floor.

Think if I were you Id hit up the landlord or whoever you rented / bought the place from as they should know that.

I am sitting in my IN house, looking at the vent in the floor next to the desk, but I have never heard of a vent that did not have some kind of way to open and close it.

Picture please.

There was an old mouse nest blocking one of my rooms when I moved in and it was a brand new house ... thankfully they had moved on but I still had to pay someone to clean out all the ducts :P

Tom_PM 04-23-2010 08:52 AM

Go to your basement and check the ducts. USUALLY (in my experience) each duct will have a diverter. A handle you can turn perpendicular to the direction of the duct (Off) or parallel (on).

You should also check seams and buy some foil tape and tape up any seams and holes.

My home has vents in the ceiling on the 4th floor and 2nd. The 3rd floor has them on the floor.

If you cannot close it, it's probably an intake.

xxweekxx 04-23-2010 08:55 AM

im just going to call a hvac company, and ill get pics of those vents in a few

I suppose it depends on your set up..you have a home with 4 floors?

camgirlshide 04-24-2010 09:32 AM

regardless if we are talking about a vent or a return there should be air flowing in one direction or the other. Put a piece of paper over it and see if it sticks to see if it is a return. If there is no air coming in or out the most likely thing is that it has come apart in the atic. The chances of it getting clogged are pretty slim. If it is apart in the atic you are wasting a lot of money in either return air that is too hot or cooling an unlived in space.
