Photos of the Oil Rig Disaster from the adjacent rig
My friend Mikey is a specialized electrician who works on the rigs out in the gulf.
Here are some pictures he took of the rig the night it happened and then the following day before it went under- http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._7687794_n.jpg http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._5859539_n.jpg http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._6549434_n.jpg http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._3282134_n.jpg http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._4503271_n.jpg |
Damn. Those look worse then the images I have seen the last few days on news.
:Oh crap |

In the last few you can actually see the thing going down. If there's one good thing about facebook I was able to know within moments of hearing the reports on the news that he was ok / not on the rig that blew. |
lol at the fire boat sprying water. doesn't look it is making a dent, I guess you got to at least try so it looks like you doing something.

I mean, I guess they know what they are doing, just doesn't make alot of sense. |
Interesting pics. I heard an "expert in containment" interviewed this morning that claimed the rig should have been allowed to burn as it would still be burning off much of the oil that is now being pumped into the ocean. He also said that it was the firefighting boats that so heavily flooded the rig that caused it to sink. Maybe truth...maybe not...but both points do have some logic when one thinks about it.
He also stated that atempting to burn the oil at sea would have little affect and attempts to skim would have little affect. He went on to say that an attempt to seal it with underwater vehicles would fail. He stated that the only viable way to seal it off would be to put in place another rig and slant drill into the shaft of the desytroyed rig and pump material into it to seal it off. He said this would take a minimum of three months or longer. |
shit happens.

This seems strange to me. Oil needs to be pretty hot to burn, doesn't it? I heard on CNN that the oil slick is over a mile DEEP. Won't the oil underwater remain unburned? And won't the surface cool as the oil spreads, leaving most of it unburned as well? |

insane photos, what a fucking catastrophe this is.
|
Wow, to see those images is heartbreaking. The loss of life and the years of repercussions from this happening is mind blowing. They are amazing pictures though.
|
was this truly an accident or was it sabotage to stop other drilling

Looks like that Iclandic volcano just popped ( pooped ) - in the sea near the US :(
|
this is just going to get worse and worse. It is now reaching the Louisiana wetlands and with the tides, waves and wind they say it will continue to push inland. Sad stuff.
|
drill, baby, drill!
|
Wow those are some pics.
They are saying up to 5, 000 barrels of oil a day are thought to be spilling into the sea |
More of them trying to contain it http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_pictures/8650069.stm
|
Nothing but disaster.
|
Amazing photos
|
I find it odd that we have had a perfect record for drilling rigs for a long time, Obama announces we're going to get more rigs and one goes up in smoke less than a month later.
Sort of like during debate for healthcare, Blue Sheild announces a 39% increase. |
i bet George W is pissed. of course i heard he's on to raping water tables now.

thanks for posting the pics

Question... understand I know nothing about this type of crap, but why couldn't you blow the hole up? Get some attack subs in there or something and fire torpedos or drop a big bomb on the hole and blow it shut?
|
I never saw such a thing! This is so much bad for the environment
|
oh man, thats awful :(
|
When it reaches the beach I'll go to home depot and buy some trash cans so I can pick it up with them and haul it home in my F150.

Fucking awesome pictures. Those things are fucking huge.
One of my friends from college works on a ship that tends to these huge riggs and pulls up next to them and helps them drill new holes or something. She's in charge of all of the electronics on the ship. |
Looks like they're gonna succeed in having gas go to $8 /gallon this summer.
|
I hate to say those are good pics but they are.

great photos. too bad its going to be getting worse and worse- and pretty much ruin alot of the gulf and surrounding areas for months and years to come.
|
Damn, that's fuuuuuuuuuuucked up. Glad I enjoyed the gulf for the past 2 years and moved out of the Tampa area right on time for this shit...
|
Just think of all the marine life affected by that.
|
I have an odd question.
Who operates those fire ships? Is it a special entity that operates in the Gulf in case of situations like this? Coast Guard? |
