First time I have, that I know of, been PHISHED! Wow, really sneaky bastards!

Someone has duplicated, multiple times, an ad we have on Craigslist to rent out our house in LA for a year.

The way they did it was to take same ad (identical), put the rent PRICE down to half or less than half of what we put in our ad - thus getting a lot of attention since it is just "too good to be true". Then people reply to ad to an email address that is NOT ours - The "phishers" in turn email them back saying they are out of town traveling but urge the potential tenants to make a deposit to "secure the place".......

WOW!

Only reason we found out about this was because a person who lives close to us saw this ad and drove by our house to check it out for himself - he called us to let us know that someone might be phishing using our house as bait. I have to really thank that guy!

In any case, let this be a warning to anyone doing similar things on Craigslist or other similar sites. They are sneaky bastards!

PS. We contacted Craigslist and all they did was flag the fake ads. Weak.

:2 cents::(:mad:

Something similar happened where we lived, except 2 different families actually showed up to move in with their uhaul trucks. It was a major mess, police and all. :(

IS that really classed as 'phishing'?

I thought phishing was trying to gain personal info etc.

Damn. Police report it is....

TheDA - Yes it is. Because someone is IMPERSONATING being us. Same theory behind "phishing".

Sounds more like fraud to me.

Phishing is the act of pretending to be someone or some entity to get personal information.
