Question for Dog owners
So my ten year old mini pinscher has done this before but has started to do it again.
If I leave a bar of soap on the edge of the bathtub, he sneaks in there and chews on the soap and scrapes it off with his teeth and eats it. Yes, my dog eats soap. Dove soap. Maybe he has some sort of deficiency? Is it normal for a dog to gnaw on a bar of soap? I caught him yesterday and he ran off chomping and licking his lips. :1orglaugh |
Dogs will eat anything. My dogs don't chew up furniture or anything, they're very well-behaved, but if they think they can eat it... doesn't matter what it is.... plastic, rocks, tree bark, drywall..... they don't care. Furry, roving garbage scows.... lol

but soap? :1orglaugh
I've had dogs eat all sorts of crap, but sudsy bitter soap is new to me. lol |
Well if you just want to teach him a lesson and are willing to "lose" that bar of soap - there is this Anti - chewing spray at the pet store that makes whatever you spray spicy - so when he tries to chew it - he won't like it. Its meant for shoes etc - because it doesn't smell or stain but I still wouldn't use the bar of soap after spraying it. Either way it will teach him and he won't do it again.

LOL, not really normal but, not uncommon. It seems Dove soap is a favorite for dogs so perhaps switching soap would stop the behavior?
|
Dogs eat soap for two reasons:
1. they are not getting enough fat in their diet and want more 2. the soap may contain animal fat in it and they can smell it and then eat it. |
That's better than what my dog eats :( Cat shit is what she likes!

Yesterday my dog...
1: Shit in my house. 2: Got into the garbage can in my office and spread it everywhere. 3: Jumped onto my leather chair and pissed on it. He's lucky my girl saved his ass or he would be gone by now. |
Yeah I have the anti chewing spray. He is a pretty good dog, doesn't chew or destroy anything but when it comes to food he gets a bit crazy. He is super smart and like I said ten years old. This old dog has no interest in new tricks. lol
It isn't the worst thing he has done, I don't mind too much but I do need my soap so he needs to cut it out. I am not leaving the soap where he can get it now, problem solved. This dog knows how to open the pantry cupboard and will steal food if I don't keep the doors secured. He can also reach one of our counters (it was designed for a short person) and has snatched entire french breads and eaten the whole thing. He can't be left alone where he can get in trouble because in his mind when we are gone he is free to do what he wants. I find it hilarious he likes soap though. :1orglaugh |

Yeah I think it has taken 5 months til our baby has become more active, and the dog is finally acting out. He does this when he doesn't get lots of attention, he is pretty spoiled with us working from home.
an adjustment period I suppose. :1orglaugh |

He's now lost ALL of his toys and the right to come inside the house. If he fucks up the yard, he's done. |

Well I know who would take him when youre fed up :pimp |
Interesting problem. Seems there's quite a bit of information in google on dogs who eat soap, and why.
http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&rl...&start=10&sa=N The most common advice on how to get them to stop seems to be "Close the bathroom door" lol |

Sounds more like you may be the issue than the dog. |
Feed that bad boy some Crisco.

My advice would be something like...
-- buy one of those "shower shelf" things and start putting the soap up higher and out of reach. -- Give the dog something tastier to chew on, like one of those beef bones from the pet store. A dog could gnaw on one of the large ones for months. -- MORE TRAINING. I hate to say it because most people think they do enough with their dogs in this department, but the fact is most don't. Dogs don't magically grow into good behavior, but rather they have to be trained OUT of their BAD behavior. More sit/stay drills and obedience techniques done consistently and pretty much any dog will start to behave far better. |

to them, beer is sweet, like syrup. so maybe soap tastes like pussy or something to your dog. (seewhatididthere?) that being said, i still have never heard of a dog eating soap. |

He's over 9 years old and most likely one of the best trained dogs you will ever see. Everybody loves my dog and they all want to take him home. See the comment from Deej above. |
one of my dogs used to like soap so much that after she had her fill, she'd try to bury it in the carpet, just like she did with her old bones.

Dogs i dont think no matter how much training give a shit, when they see something they want, theyll take it and chew it up. |

Who the hell is Ceaser Romero? Are you a racist and all brown skin people look the same to you or something? If he needs anything other than a short chain it would be Cesar Millan. |

I know why he's doing it. He's pissed at us. We had a dog sitter who for some reason wasn't able to read directions very well and ended up feeding him 2.5 x more than we told her to. Now he's pissed because we've cut him back to his regular amount. |
maybe he likes the smell of it? Try a different "flavour" of soap? Other than that, get a soap dish that's higher up off the ground ;)

Exactly. Nothing but paper, empty ink cartridges, and basic office waste in the trash can he got into. One of the spoiled fuckers 3 beds is in my office. He took about half the trash to his bed then spread the rest all around my office and down the hall. When I discovered this, he dashed to the living room, jumped up on the chair, and pissed all over it...Right in front of me. Clearly he's just being a dick...So, I have been returning the favor. |

personally i think its rebellion because we have baby now and he is jealous and we devote all our time to her, despite me playing with him (dog) outside etc,... i guess its still not the same amount of play he used to get. But he just dont understand, when baby grows, she gonna play with him all day!!! |
My dogs will eat anything. ANYTHING.
This includes- poop receipts fiber / fabric cardboard underwear They only chew shoes for attention, they won't touch them if we're not home- but nearly anything else they can get to is fair game. If I tell them "no" they drop it, but once in a blue moon they will try to run away with something, they are very partial to kleenex. My guys are just chewers. I do a pretty good job of staying on top things, but people come in and out, receipts fall out of pockets, tissues get dropped, it's rare but it happens. Except poop, poop is like a magical special treat and late at night they will try and sneak over to the cat box and steal a nug. They LOVE it. Maybe its like a nestles crunch to them, but its fucking disgusting. |

I have a lot of experience with dogs, and have solved many problems with my own pups in the past. My advice is to stop leaving the goddamn soap there.
